I had mine done with no anesthesia. They recently started doing this. I had the numbing spray but that was it. I gagged but knew I would so was prepared. They talked me threw it. Easy and I got up and went home.

That's the way mine was done back in 1998. I remember gaging and feeling a wee bit uncomfortable but nothing major.

I thought that was how it would be done this time as well... Until my Dr told me at consult that I'd be very sleepy and probably wouldn't remember a thing. I like this way better.. Hahahahahaha

Whoa! Hold up! You need to be under anesthesia to get the EGD??? Just what is this EGD? I'm getting one on 6/10 and didn't realize I need to be under! Argh!!

Can you drive after wards or should I have someone come get me?

I was required to bring someone with me to drive me home. But I actually wasn't that groggy once I woke up.

You have to bring someone in - and you don't want to eat or drink after midnight - done things to remember, but easy !

It's super easy. I just had it done today. You go in and it's over before you know it. Promise!

You sign something saying you won't drive in the next 24 hours. Otherwise you could get a DUI. I woke up and felt fine, then felt slow for a couple hours, but feel fine nonetheless. Don't worry at all. Have someone drive you and bring you back home.

I know you've already had it, but I like to clear things up about propofol (the drug Michael Jackson was taking). It is actually an incredible drug. I was an ICU nurse, and we used it all the time for patients on ventilators. It is the best of the twilight sedation meds for GI procedures. It is safe when used in a monitored situation (which GI procedures always are) and it clears out of your system very quickly (but you still need someone else to drive). What made it so unsafe for MJ was that he was using it inappropriately and was not being monitored.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
