I am 11 months out from my gastric bypass. I thought it would be nice to have some raw carrots as a snack. They seemed to go down just fine, but I have spent the last 24 hours unable to keep anything down. It felt like a brick was stuck in my stomach. I am finally better, but I wanted to warn other folks about how indigestible raw carrots are when you eat too many of them. I've dropped 3 pounds in 24 hours thanks to those suckers. I have learned my lesson.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with a different raw vegetable?

Interesting... I wonder what it is about the carrots that don't agree with you? I e been eating raw baby carrots since about 3 or 4 months out with no issues. I eat some on a daily basis. Most veggies have been fine for me... though I stayed away from fiberous ones (celery, asparagus) until I was around 6 months out.

First thing I learned, everyone has a different path down the bypass journey.

Hmmm - that is strange. I too eat carrots without issue. I have not tried celery yet (though I have oddly craved it); however, I am able to eat apples even with the skin which gives some people issues. Are you sure you chewed them well enough? The only reason I ask is that I had a similar experience after eating peanuts at about 3 months out and didn't chew well. Additionally it turned out I had a stricture (scar tissue over the stomach opening) and a very small piece of peanut got stuck. Ugh, it was awful. It took several more days of throwing up everything before we figured it out and then had the balloon dilation to stretch the opening. No issues with peanuts now.

I am still unable to keep food down. I am wondering if I have a stricture that is still trapping some of the carrot. I'm going to starve if I can't keep things down. It really sucks because I am hungry. I might need to call my doctor's office tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

I went to see my surgeon today and the carrots that I ate are the source of my problem. I'll be on Clear liquids for a few days and need to take Omeprazole and Carafate. I've lost 5 lbs. in 2 1/2 days from not being able to keep things down. I'm definitely hungry so going back to a liquid diet is no fun as we all know.

This is how my surgeon explained my problem. If you eat food you cannot digest then a chain reaction can occur. The food irritates the opening to your intestines. You try eat solid food later on and throw it up due to the undigested food. This starts a vicious cycle of eating and throwing up food. Your stomach's new opening to your intestines gets inflamed. The more you throw up, the worse it gets. The drugs I've have been prescribed act like a stomach coating and an acid reducer. The inflammation in my stomach has to resolve before I can eat solid food again. I am in for a rough few days until all is calm in my stomach again. My surgeon said that he sees this problem on a regular basis.

Hope this info helps other people NOT go through what I have gone through. Pay attention to the list of problem foods that your doctor gives you. There is a good reason those foods have made it to that list.

Update - It took a full week to return to eating normal food. I will never eat a handful of raw carrots as a snack again. Just the sight of carrots makes me cringe now.

Yeah. I had a bad time with celery, although my nutritionist was doubtful that it was dumping. I have been avoiding celery, asparagus, and I was considering carrots, but so far thought better of it. The celery, which I ate a decent amount of (I really craved it) caused severe cramps, dizziness and a laxative effect after 12 hours after my am caffeine/shake until my system seemed to purge itself and also I took something to calm my stomach.

Also, I ate cooked, not puréed pinto Beans my first month and they felt like I ate gravel. At this point other veggies seem fine.

I'm 2.5 years out and still have that issue with raw cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower) and carrots

Whoops edited because I didn't realize this was in the bypass forum, sorry. I have a sleeve. Please disregard!

I made this mistake Spring Break while sitting on the beach. I ate almost an entire little packet of raw carrots. I honestly didn't know if I was going to make it up to my room to go to the bathroom. It was so painful. I haven't ate a carrot since. I'm scared lol.

Carrots are definitely not to be trusted. I had a very bad experience with the little orange devils. <insert GI upset here>. Ugh- stay away!

I just bought a bag because I thought the sweet crunch would be great. I've been able to eat raw red peppers ok. Thanks for the warning.

I haven't had any problem eating raw carrots, but I do make sure to eat them slowly and chew them very well. I've been eating them probably since I was 4 or 5 months out with no problems

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
