Insulin dependence- scared of ups and downs post-op

Recommended Posts

I have just started my weight loss journey- consulted with surgeon but I am a little hesitant because I take literally 200+ units per day of insulin and am wondering how my body will react to getting the sleeve. I am sure that I will have to cut back on my insulin since my diet will drastically change. I also have high blood pressure. My biggest fear with the surgery is that my body will not stabilize quickly enough for me to return to work so that I can support my family. I have 8-12 weeks of sick leave but I am in one of those positions where they don't really want me to take more than 2 weeks off. My job is very demanding mentally and requires me to be on point at all times and oftentimes work alone or supervising others. I am so afraid that I will be having hypoglycemic episodes, low blood pressure, nausea/vomiting while I am supposed to be working. Anyone have any experience with this?

DB2 for over 16 yrs and insulin depent 3x day with metformin had VGS 4/27. Now no insulin it took about a week after VGS. Working on metformin to be eliminated but has not happened. Must be careful to eat and drink, at first sign of feeling slightly funny take your blood sugar. I'm a Nurse Coordinator for Intensive Care ...must take care of everything patients nurses families and Hospital needs. Just took off 2 1/2 weeks. 2 was plenty. Long hours 12~15. I make sure to take drinking breaks and meal breaks. Take care of self first then others. Get up and walk it works. I feel great much more energy just cant believe its me. Mind is so alert and most of all Happy. I pray you great success.

I took two weeks off to recover from surgery, and the first week back at work, I didn't jump into long days at work, I worked two 1/2 days and then three 3/4 days, kind of "off-the-books" but agreed with my boss. I still wouldn't say it was "a breeze, you're fine in two days", as one guy here apparently experienced, but as it was handled, I made it through without any drama.

I can't speak to short-term insulin fluctuations but I am sure that you know that the weight loss associated with bariatric surgery has a high likelihood of improving Type 2 diabetes over the first year, so big picture, this is the thing to do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
