Weight Loss/Emotional Eating Books

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery a week from today.

I haven't always been overweight/obese, I used to run, play softball, lift weights, etc... I really feel like I know a lot about nutrition, proteins/carbs, calories in vs. calories out, whole foods vs processed foods.

What I still need help with is how to combat emotional eating. I know what I need to do but I just can't seem to always do it. I've read several books but am still looking to conquer this demon. Has anyone read any books they'd recommend?

When food is Love by Geneen Roth (actually, anything by Geneen Roth)

Eat it Up! by Connie Stapleton

Overeater's Anonymous literature (OA.org)

Alcoholic's Anonymous Big Book (replace alcohol and alcoholic with food and compulsive eater and it applies)

Not food related, but very helpful:

The One Life Solution by Dr. Henry Cloud

Anything by Brene Brown

The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie

I'm an emotional eater and currently PreOp working on these issues. I agree with Inner Surfer Girl, When food Is Love by Geneen Roth is a must read.

I am also reading/working through, End Emotional Eating: Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills to Cope with Difficult Emotions and Develop a Healthy Relationship to food by Jennifer Taitz. This book is more interactive with assignments and journals. I have really learned a lot from this book. Taitz is a psychologist.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
