NUT's sample menu--too many calories?

Recommended Posts

I am starting week 3 post-op and am doing really well. Things are healing and I'm hitting my Protein, liquid, and Vitamin targets without a struggle. On my plan, weeks 2-4 are puréed food. My concern is that the sample menu provided by my NUT seems high in calories, especially compared to some plans on here.

Basically, the sample menu has me eating 3 meals and 3 Snacks each day, with up to one cup volume at each meal. I calculated the calories for their sample menu, and it is just under 1,000 calories. That seems pretty high to me at this stage. I'm going to ask my NUT about it at my next appointment, but I thought I would ask for opinions here as well.

First -- at this stage, don't count calories, count grams of Protein. That is actually more important. Try to forget about calories right now.

Second, I'm not a NUT so definitely ask your NUT for more info. However, I think these are just goals and at Week 3, you probably won't reach those goals so I wouldn't worry too much. Your Snacks should be small Snacks, not as large as your meals. If you are watching your Protein and counting it, as well as logging it in your food journal, that's awesome. Listen to your body. You should never be "full". You should always be satisfied so if you can't eat a cup of your food for your meal, don't freak out.

Third, well, I forgot what else I was going to say! lol Sorry. lol

that seems like a lot to me. I think at that point I was only eating about 1/4 C per meal. I'd just ask your NUT.

In all the literature I received both pre and post op gave guidelines, but also said "if you feel full, stop." So basically what they give are just guidelines; some days I can eat what is suggested and other days I just can't. Today my system is off due to weather affecting me, so I'm sticking to just Protein shakes and liquids. Don't want to make myself feel sick. I think you just have to listen to what your body is telling you. Just because something is listed doesn't mean you HAVE to eat it or that you HAVE to eat all of it.

Trust me when I say it will be physically impossible to eat a whole cup of anything. For the first month I was lucky if I could take in a whole 2oz at a time. I'm 6 months out now and still can't hold a full cup of food.< /p>

I had my Nut appointment around 3 weeks, and my goal was 800-1000 calories. I couldn't eat much then, but in the last few weeks I am closer to and even exceeding those goals. My weight loss went faster once I was able to get closer to 1000 calories a day. That broke my plateau, and I guess let my body know it wasn't actually starving.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
