Barie 2 Posted May 10, 2016 So i had my surgery Feb 12th 2016 and just had my 3 month post op checkup.. all my Vitamins, Protein and blood work came back fine. Except my B1 had not come back yet. My results just came in and i have to go for B1 shots because its severly low. Ive been having problems with eating meat or eggs.. makes me sick and i can only eat a bite or two. I have also been throwing up. Dr told me it was normal. My protein came back completely fine. I can eat vegatables and fruit with little problems and i think thats why my other vitamins were fantastic. Ive been eating nuts, guacamole, hummus, cheese, black Beans etc to keep my protein and B vitamins up. I cant take pills cause i throw them up but i take a chewable multi and liquid B-Complex w/B12... what am i doing wrong and what else can i do? Christinamo7 4,042 Posted May 10, 2016 bless. I *hate* throwing up. yuk. and I hate you're having this struggle. you're not likely doing anything wrong at all. the B1 shot should sort you out, and hopefully later when you try meat or eggs they will do fine, but it takes some stomachs longer to be ready for them. when you do try them make sure they're moist, I have always found ground meat easier to tolerate, and I tend to cook it in my crock pot. eggs I prefer scrambled and moist. it is just so important to do those follow up appointments and have them check your B1 as often as they recommend, and you're already doing that, so I think you're probably doing things exactly right. Barie 2 Posted May 10, 2016 Thank you.. im just so frustrated... i was so excited when he told me everything looked great with my blood work and all my counts were fantastic... then this comes back and i cant figure out why just my B1 is bad when everything else is great and I've been eating B1 rich foods daily along with a B-complex sublingual Vitamin supplement.. it boggles my mind Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
FitFunFamily 53 Posted June 9, 2016 My surgeon told me specifically to take B1 Vitamins because the stomach helps absorb (or prepares it to be absorbed) this particular Vitamin and after VSG, we obviously have less stomach. B1 deficiencies can have very severe symptoms and are NOT reversible! Tingling in hands and feet, problems with nerves, cognitive/memory problems. Not all people with B1 deficiency gets the symptoms (only about 3%) but you don't want to test out to see if you're one of them! It's good that you found this deficiency early and are getting shots to bring your levels up! Keep monitoring it and you should do just fine!
moejoe27 130 Posted June 17, 2016 B1 shots right here!!! Lord have mercy! I lost feeling in my arms and my legs. I didn't know what what going on. I could eat Protein but I couldn't eat carbs. Nothing with any carbs would stay down. Made me so sick. My eyes started acting funny kinda like the muscles wouldn't move fast enough. I went in the hospital a month ago today. My blood work came back good last week but looks like shots once a month. It was soooo scary Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
