what to use when protein shakes are too sweet

Recommended Posts

Hi all!! I am just over 3 months post-op, and am almost 60lbs down. I have hit a bump where the scale doesnt want to move much.. so my surgeon has told me to try the liquid diet for a couple days..well that is all fine and good, however, the Protein Shakes i have tried are ALL too sweet for me since surgery. can anyone suggest something to help?

Thanks so much!!

I thought (and still think) the Protein shakes were all too sweet, too. I ended up diluting everything. If it's a powder, I used 16-20 oz of milk or Water instead of the 8oz the directions called for. I mixed Premier chocolate RTD 1/2 and 1/2 with milk to make it much more palatable. The other option is to add unflavored Protein Powder to broths for a savory option.

As for your stall, 3 months out seems a little early to be resorting back to liquids. Stalls this early are typically caused by not enough fluids, not enough Protein, actually too few calories, or its just your body taking a break and it's totally normal. 60 pounds is a huge loss for just 3 months....your body definitely could use a break. Not to mention you are probably losing inches even if you aren't losing pounds. I lost absolutely nothing between weeks 6 and 10. In fact I actually gained 3 pounds. But I Dropped a whole pant size in those 4 weeks and finally started losing again as soon as I drastically INCREASED my calories and fluids.

So Make sure you are getting AT LEAST 64oz fluids and 60-80g protein before you opt to starve your poor body even more. BTW, What's your calorie intake?

Plain whey protien powder and then flavor it the way you like. Stevia, cinnamon, extracts. Play evil scientist and have fun.

Try Unjury chicken Soup or ProtiDiet creamy chicken or Tomato basil. These really helped when I was tired of sweet shakes. You can also drink Bone Broth or add unflavored Protein to Soups or broths. V8 is also good when I am tired of sweets.

I added instant coffee to mine--a lot of instant coffee.< /p>

Be sure to check with your bariatric team to see if your program allows for you to have coffee.

If so, give it a try. The bitterness of the coffee cuts the sweetness of the Protein shake.

Good luck, friend.

Get the unflavored Protein and mix it in your favorite drink and flavor as you want. I've even made my own chocolate milk using Hershey cocoa powder, Splenda, and milk. It was pretty decent and you can dial down the sweet to where you want it.

Unflavored Protein Powder mixed with 2Tbsp PB2(healthy Peanut Butter powder) in almond milk, hope this helps some.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
