Hi, I'm one week a way from getting banded and i have several questions in my head and your help is greatly appreciate it.

1- For how long do i need to stay on the liquid diet?

2- When can start eating pureed food?

3- What are some of the things that some of you drank during the liquid stage?

4- What kind of Protein Shakes do your recommend (Slim-Fast, etc)?

5- While on the liquid stage, how often do you have to drink something so that you dont feel hungry?

My surgery date is on 8/20 at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ.

1- For as long as your doc tells you to.

2- When your doc tells you that you can start eating pureed food is when you can start.

3- Soup, V8, Protien shakes, Juices.

4- I like the Atkins shakes and also a product from powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, chocolate is my favorite flavor. Welcome to the Unjury Homepage

5- I think how often you have to drink something varies by person.

Good luck with your surgery!!!

lfm, good luck with your pre-op diet and surgery. I've found shakes that I really like the taste of and am happy with the weight I've lost. They are Nutrimeal from USANA and come in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. They're not just Protein shakes, but a complete Meal Replacement. One does replace a meal and I'm not hungry after one, but I had to reset my body to a healthier lifestyle in the beginning.

Usana is one of the worst products one can use for banding. The fat content is high, carbs are very high, the calories are double what bandsters should consume, there is far too much sugar in them, and it's just a bad product all around. If that isn't enough the Protein is horrible, not a good quantity at all.

unjury, Matrix, and Isopure have half the calories and double the protein. Usana is BAD for bandsters. Might as well drink full sugar carnation instant Breakfast, at least that is cheaper.

For Protein shakes, I REALLY like Dymatize Cafe Mocha ELITE whey Protein isolate. I mix 8 oz skim milk with that and some ice cubes and blast it in my personal blender and it is wonderful. Haven't found one I like better so far.

Also, for clear drinks, try the Isopure in the bottle (you don't mix it). It's like fruit punch or kool aid and I have actually found that it is very good. They have about 8 flavors. Haven't found one yet that I really don't like at all. Each bottle has 42 mg of protein so drink half a bottle at a time over ice. Water down just a tad if it is a little too sweet for you. Don't think GNC carries it (they carry all the powder stuff) but you might try a health food store that concentrates on things like weight training, etc.

Hey! My nurse turned me on to the Low Carb Slim Fast. It has 20 g's of Protein and only 4 carbs. I never thought I would say this but the vanilla is better than the chocolate!! lol Anyhow, can't beat them for convenience either!! Make sure not the regular SF or the Optima....those have way to many carbs and not enough Protein.< /p>

I drink different broths from Soups and vegetable juice out of canned veggies. I will be on it for two weeks, however, doctors are different.

Also, I was told to drink 2 oz Water every 15 minutes and I haven't been hungry yet.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A. Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
