Hi everyone, so I've been cleared by my insurance for surgery, just wondering what pre-lab work the doctor required from you and what your doctor sent you for before okay the surgery.

Before surgery, I underwent almost a day of pre-op testing at the hospital. In areas that caused concern, I had to undergo a second round of pre-op testing with specialist in their respective fields.

I go for my pre op tests tomorrow. Surgery is next week. I wasn't tested for sleep apnea prior to surgery but have had sleep studies in the past.

I only had to go for blood work and a EKG. My surgeon didn't require sleep study or endoscopy. He performed an endoscopy during my surgery plus my gallbladder had to be removed.

Prior to surgery, I had the signs of sleep apnea. I snored all night long and this kept my wife awake night after night. This went on for several years. So during my second round of pre-op testing I was required to be examined by a pulmonologist (as I recall). He concluded that I most likely had sleep apnea and recommended a sleep study. I declined because I knew the condition would likely improve after surgery. So I told him that if I still have the condition after surgery, I will undergo a sleep study tests. He was fine with that approach.

Shortly after surgery, my snoring came to an end. I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my wife hovering over me. I was sleeping so quietly, she thought I had died and she was trying to detect if I was still breathing.

So I think the answer is no unless you show signs of sleep apnea, such as snoring.

Oh okay, thank you. I don't snore every night, I do when I'm sick. But I'm a side sleeper. Not sure if that plays a factor

My doctor made me do a in home sleep study because I do snore quite loudly. He wanted this info for safety during surgery. I have to have an EGD done because my I'm nauseous a lot. I also have to see a cardiologist. I'm not sure what testing he is going to do, probably an EKG. I think every doctor is different and it depends on your symptoms. Good Luck:)

My doctor is a stickler about sleep apnea and requires a sleep study, and if you don't have your cpap with you the morning of surgery, he will cancel your surgery.

Prior to surgery, I had to have the sleep study test (which I failed and now Horton and I sleep together every night), blood draws, EKG, PFG, 3 NUT appointments, Physical Therapy evaluation, some kind of test for acid in my stomach, and then just a few days ago I had a Pre-op appointment which included another blood draw, another EKG, and a chest x-ray.

My surgery is on May 16th, less than a week away! OMG!

I do not have to do any tests except for the psych eval. My pcp is really on top of my blood work and other tests. I just have my pre-surgery weight to lose.

Do most people have pre-surgery weight to lose? Is this surgeon preference or insurance?

My doctor (Medical Director at my Center) wanted me to lose 9 pounds before sending me to the surgeon for a consultation. It is her preference for patients to lose a percentage of their excess weight pre-op. It wasn't an insurance requirement.

You'll likely have an EKG to make sure your heart is healthy enough for surgery, and an endoscopy to make sure your throat/stomach are healthy with no issues to be treated before surgery, and maybe an ultrasound to check your gallbladder to make sure it looks healthy and there are no stones.
