Hi everyone, I'm new to this adventure. I haven't even seen dietitian yet. I have been trying to make changes, that I know I will eventually need to make and the one I'm having the most problems with is not drinking while eating and within 30 before or after. I have always gotten so much pleasure from quenching my thirst while eating. Anyone deal with this problem? Or have any ideas how to make it easier?

Also I have pretty bad dry mouth which makes it hard too. TIA

I did it sometimes preop, basically whenever I thought about it or could, so like one meal a day. I think it was probably easier to slowly ease myself into it than to add yet another huge lifestyle change on top of everything else after surgery. I just didn't do it religiously preop; only enough to teach myself how and to get used to it.

Trust me - most have struggled with it pre-op. Once you are post-op, you will see how full (overfull) you get it you do it so it becomes a habit very quickly. I did not do it pre-op but it was easily the first (and easiest) rule post-op.

You can sip small amounts while you eat to help with the dry mouth. Just forget about washing down supper with a 12 ounce drink, more like 2 ounces max...

I doubt I will have this issue, out of no where I barely drink fluids, I don't drink with my meals and thought that was a huge issue, but I found out your not going to once you have the surgery.

My surgery is next Monday... I've practiced this no drinking thing on and off for the past couple of months... it really makes me slow down and have to think. I've not been hardcore about it though, I've read that it's just going to be easier on the other side.

I used to have this rationale that if I drank a soda with a really big meal (when I really wanted to pig out) then I could eat more because the burps would open up more space... :::shaking my head::::

That's exactly what bothered me a bit. I love having a tall glass of milk with my meals. And I love to gulp. I think things will be SO different after our surgery. I wouldn't worry about doing it pre-op though. Remember you're going to have 1 full week after surgery of nothing but liquids, then another full week of full liquids and then yet another full week of soft foods. So I think you will ease yourself into it

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
