What is/was your post op diet?

Recommended Posts

Mine is 4 oz Protein Shake 2-3 times a day plus Clear liquids for 1 week ( hooray! 1 more day to go!) and then I can slowly have a teaspoon of applesauce, thin mashed potatoes, low fat cottage cheese, or thin oatmeal, plus my Protein shakes for 1 week. The 3rd week is scrambled eggs, flaky fish, hummus, soft cheese and tuna and 1 or 2 crackers, or a quarter slice of toast. Plus everything from weeks 1and two except discontinue the Protein Shakes. After that every week I get to add in another food option until week seven when I can pretty much eat normally, but at the pace my body allows.

I had surgery 4/13

Was sent home on stage 3. For the first 2 weeks until my post up apt I had

Clear Liquids, Protein shakes and yogurt. Week 3 until my next nut apt in about 3 weeks i'm on stage 4 soft foods.

Cottage cheese, fish, salmon, tuna in Water ect.

I have been on stage 4 for almost 2 weeks now. I'm trying to make different types of food. YES! I have had to trow away lots of food either because I didn't like the taste or because I like it the first time but not anymore.

My tastes have changed a lot after surgery and it does happen to many people. I remember when I was told I had to get used to wasting food as it would be no option after surgery

And I use light mayo almost on everything to moisten, of course in moderation ( don't really like much the taste of broth on foods)

I recently bought 2 recipe books attachicon.gifImageUploadedByBariatricPal1462836349.880646.jpgattachicon.gifImageUploadedByBariatricPal1462836373.573474.jpg

We bought the second book! The first one was just recommended during my last bariatric surgery support group. I need to get it. I find I'm eating way too many of the same things and need to change it up a bit.

Right now I'm probably eating about 600 calories. My nutritionist said as long as long as I'm getting enough Protein and fluids in, I'm okay, but I am worried, at 8 weeks out, I should be having a little more. My book from Mayo Clinic indications around 800 this stage, working my way up to 1000-1200 by the time I hit 3-4 months. I think as I add more solid foods (I got the okay to add very small amounts of starches, if I can get them down, during this stage), that will increase. I tried a Triscuit last night and it went down okay. Woo!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
