So, I am currently doing the preop stages and set to have surgery in june. My surgeon has me on the supervised preop diet which includes liquid phases and supplementing with Protein Drinks. My nut told me as long as the protien has less than 200 calories and more than 20 grams of protien it's ok to use. I've been using the premixed Premier Protein every once in a while but if I'm drinking 3 a day at 7$ for a 4 pack it gets pretty pricey so I got a powder one scoop is 30 g of protien and 170 calories w/ 10 Oz of Water. It's cheaper, comes in bulk, and tastes ok. But now I'm having doubts about it. I had a friend over the other day and they saw it and asked "isn't that the kind of protien that makes you gain weight?" Now theyve got me worried. Is there a difference? Or is it just how you use it? I've been losing but now I'm worried I'm not losing as much as I could have been. The protien is called six star if anyone wants to look it up.

Ok my question is is there a difference in protien powder that makes u gain weight to gain muscle and protien to lose weight or is it all about how you use it?

There are different types of Protein powders. I believe even to gain muscle they drink the shakes because Protein helps build muscle as well.

And I'm pretty sure that's why we need it to not lose our muscle mass.

After surgery your meal volume will be incredibly small and as a result if you did not consume Protein shakes, your body will suffer because of a lack of Protein. Your muscles will begin to deteriorate and shrink. The two important qualities of a Protein shake it that it contains a minimal amount of sugar and that you can tolerate the taste. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) powder. It is 210 calories, 25 grams protein, 2 grams sugar.

Also after surgery, your taste buds will change. So even though you might find it acceptable now, be prepared to experiment with other brands if you need to.

In order to keep the cost low, once I locked onto a type of Protein Shake that I found acceptable, I ordered it by 26.5 ounce plastic containers over the internet.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
