Was anyone prescribed blood thinners after surgery to prevent clots? I was only prescribed liquid Tylenol with codeine and Nexium. My GF was concerned about clots.

Clots are not something to casually disregard. Enough docs opt for blood thinners to indicate it's importance.

Sometimes you just have to be your own advocate and need to ask your Doc about your concerns. If he doesn't think you need prescribed thinners, then maybe just baby aspirin. Once of prevention. Hey. doesn't hurt to ask. ;)

Couldn't leave it at that without throwing in another tidbit. I have had several surgeries. Lots. And every single time I was given Lovenox post-op. Furthermore with almost all my surgeries, the main complication I heard about was DVT's, PE's, or clots. And they were very serious complications. Thankfully, I had none. Just saying.

I, too, have had several surgeries....6 different surgeons in 5 different facilities....and have never once been given blood thinners postop. The only clot preventatives I ever received were compression stockings and orders to walk a lot.

I was rx'ed a 14 day supply of shots, as well as advised to walk intermittently to prevent clots. I've had other surgeries and this was the first time for blood thinners. I assumed it was because of the nature of the surgery, my age, and weight, etc. and that those would make me higher risk than at other times of my surgeries.

My surgeon only prescribes post op blood thinners for those with a BMI over 50.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
