Mine was necessary because I had NASD: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. My liver (which lays in front of the stomach) was enlarged and needed to be shrunk so that the doctor could have easier access to my stomach. I was on liquids for ten days.

not just every doctor, but even with the same doctor the instructions will vary from patient to patient according to their own medical needs.

my doctor often has patients on a two week liquid pre op diet to shrink the liver for their own good, because the liver has to be able to be moved to get to the stomach. However, I had a recent CT scan and my physical exam showed him that I did not need to do that part, just liquids the day before surgery and clean out my bowel.

It is the HARDEST part of the process to me. I was on liquids for two weeks after as my stomach healed, but you can get through it! hang in there, it's worth it.

@@findingnish It's to reduce the risk of complications in surgery because typically obese people have fatty liver disease and the liver is on top of the stomach and needs to be moved for surgery. The liquid diet decreases the size of the liver for surgery. Every program is different - and as @@Christinamo7 indicated sometimes it varies by patient.

As a whole class everyone was put on 2 week liquid diet do you think I can eat something....no one was singled out for the liquid diet to me it was pretty much everyone in the nutrition class I could be wrong but it was told to us as a whole but maybe individual sessions we're given

@@findingnish - its so you can have a safe uneventful surgery. :)

They are the professionals and my suggestion is to do as they ask, even though it is insane.

Hand in there, most of us have "been there and done that" and survived.

Hangry is a great word too (Hungry+Angry)!

@@findingnish Not sure why some surgeons require it and others don't - but I've heard of surgeons refusing to complete surgery if the person didn't follow the diet. Call your Nutritionist and see if there's anything else you can have.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
