Did anyone's insurance call...

Recommended Posts

I had my first consult and meeting with a dietician and my second is scheduled for May 17. Yesterday, someone from BCBS called me to let me know of a service they offer where I can talk to a nurse about health concerns and they asked me a questionnaire on my health. I mentioned I was confused why they were calling and was it in reference to any preauthorization of a future surgery - she said no. It made me uneasy that they're asking questions and not revealing their intent and that they might use it to deny surgery. Anyone else have a nurse call to ask you to rate your health?

I'm private pay so I can't say yes. However a nurse from the insurance company calling sounds suspicious to me, if only because I watched the documentary Sicko and the doctor that advised the company to deny an expensive life saving surgery, himself got a bonus for saving the insurance company some money.

Mine did. I never answered the calls, and refused to call them back. I have a doctor, several in fact, why would i talk to a nurse from the insurance company?

I have Aetna and had a nurse assigned to me during my approval process. She ended up being a huge advocate for me and my surgery was approved within 48 hours. She did get personal and I had weekly phone calls with her to track my progress and health.

My hubbies company provides a service were I talk to a nurse about my health. They are from a company called Red Brick Health and from talking to her I have learned a lot because I can pick topics I want to talk about or need help understanding and in the long run it helped get me through the process and get approval faster. And a bonus I received was a $300 gift card to Target to get whatever I wanted. I saved it and got new clothes after I dropped 80 pounds. It was awesome and helped me a lot. Do not be afraid to help yourself along and get through this faster by talking to her.

By the way I only had my BMI going for me to qualify for surgery.

Just beware! Insurance companies sole purpose is to make money! I'm sorry to sound cynical but they do not care about you or your weight loss. Whenever my insurance company calls me I ask questions and terminate the call. They can and I'm sure do at times use the informational provided to them as a basis for their decisions. It is important to always know to whom you are speaking and why they want to know certain things about you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
