My doc never mentioned this..

@@LindaLena, I almost canceled because of the "possibility" of throwing up. I was scared more about vomiting then giving up my beloved Diet Pepsi, so I understand the fear.

I never had reflux before or after surgery. And I'm hapy to say, 19 months post-op and I've never had foamies or thrown up.

I have only experienced mild dumping symptoms ( hot flashes, a little sweaty but no vomiting or diarrhea) and it usually subsides within 10-15 minutes.

I won't tell you what to do but I will say I'm glad I didn't give in to my fear. This was one of my greatest decisions .

@@LindaLena,

Great questions! About foamies, I agree with the others. If you eat right, your chance of vomiting will drop a lot. Also, they’re likely to only last for a short time.

For GERD/reflux, that’s a bit of a toss-up. As far as I know, some studies show that GERD tends to go away after the sleeve. Some show that GERD tends to start after the sleeve. So I think it’s a bit of a question of luck, but like the other members said, you can ask about medications and also how to eat to reduce GERD.

For both questions, though, ask your surgeon. Ask about the risk, and the effects, and what you can do to prevent them, and what you can do if you can get them. Don’t automatically just cancel your sleeve surgery – get the answers first! Good luck.

14 months sleeved...

No 'foamies'...

No vomiting...

No reflux...

Indigestion on occasion...

But that's treated with a few mints...

So it's certainly not guaranteed doom and gloom...

@@LindaLena - You know the only problem I have had is when I go from OK to CO. After a few days of being a mile up, my diaphragm seems to tighten up. Just follow the doctors instructions. You can practice eating slow for one meal a day. Which is helpful to make sure you are listening to the signals from your sleeve.

@@OKCPirate, interesting about your diaphragm. I never realized that could be an issue

I'm sorry, I should mention this is personal observation, not scientifically proven, but I have only had those retching episodes at altitudes over a mile for 72 hours.

I am over 20 months post-op and only had foamies one time. It was at this past Thanksgiving. I ate too much too fast, including dense Protein (turkey) and it got "stuck" and thus the foamies happened. Never again! I am super careful when I eat things like pork and turkey now!

Unfortunately, I am one who developed GERD post sleeve. I didn't have it before surgery, and if I did, I may have selected Bypass over Sleeve, but I would not have cancelled my surgery entirely. I'm now discussing converting to bypass as a way to control my "out of control" reflux. With everything I'm going through, I'm still grateful for my surgery and the new lease on life it gave me.

Don't make your decisions based on some issue that may or may not occur. I was/am a VERY squeamish patient, so I know how you feel. I had surgery at the end of December. I only vomited a little the first few days after surgery. This can happen after any surgery, by the way! If you follow the guidelines and listen to your body, you'll be just fine! :)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
