Protein Shake and dumping syndrome!

Recommended Posts

Could you be drinking too fast? The Protein powder I use is called Milk shake Bar, they are really good. My surgeon said at least 60gms a day. My Protein Powder has per serving 3.6mg. carbs, sugars 2.6, Protein 22g. They have several flavors, and I buy it on line from Amazon. Good Luck!

Ensure is loaded with sugars - it's not a good choice for Bariatric patients. That could definitely be causing dumping. Premier Protein is a good option - 30 gms Protein and very little fat or sugar! Ensure (original) has 6gms fat, 33 carbs and only 9 gms protein. I am surprised your surgeon said it was okay.

Oh dear thank for the info. I'll defiantly try and find another brand. It doesn't seem to be easy to find what I want where I live so I might resort to ordering online.

Let's say if down the line I can manage to eat a full chicken breast per day. Would that be enough and there will be no need for the Protein shake?

Do you have carnation Breakfast essentials no sugar added at your local stores?

No .. I live in a different continent btw.. But we do have GNC ! Is that good enough? Ordering online will take some time so until then can I use something from GNC instead?

I was surprised by the comment by my NUT made this week, that whey isolate Protein is not good in that it does not supply the body with the full Protein value on the label (Only gives 12 grams when say 30 grams), and so she want to see all Proteins B4 we use to approve it.

I have used it for years and been told by others that whey Isolate is a good quality protein and best utilized by the body.

I also have a lot of it, in different flavors on hand, with high protein, low to no carbs.

Any one have any info on this, or do I really have a lot of protein that is not great to use?

My nutritionist just gave a talk and she said whey isolate is fine, but to make sure you get your protein from a variety of sources animal, plant, dairy, etc. I would be curious about her source, new versus old data. Also, I kind of doubt we manage to absorb all our protein we consume, but there has to be some research out there. I find with nutrition there are a lot of different opinions.

@@mmy,

I am surprised that your surgeon specifically recommended Ensure. I assume it is Ensure high Protein with 16 grams Protein and 4 grams sugar? Even though there are only 4 grams of sugar, there are 19 grams total carbs – including some from maltodextrin, which can cause diarrhea.

Also, some WLS patients have trouble with lactose and also with milk protein solids, which is the source of protein in Ensure. Sometimes whey and milk protein concentrate cause problems. If you think that’s a problem, you might want to try a shake with a different protein source, like soy, egg, or even pea.

Also, drink slowly!

Remember, there’s a good chance you’ll become less sensitive soon.

I remember seeing a few times people saying they like a GNC product called lean shake 25. I believe it is low carb/high Protein. I haven't tried it myself but maybe search lean shake 25 in this app to find out more. It may be a powder and not a ready to drink. I am sure the people at GNC would be able to advise you on a low carb high Protein Meal Replacement. Good luck!

Try the GNC Lean 25. I like the orange cream flavor. The mixed berry is pretty good, too. If you go in to GNC, you should be able to sample some different flavors.

A single full chicken breast will not give you enough protein for the day, but yes, eventually, you should be able to get all or most of your protein from food.

I am a year out and I get most of my 100 grams of protein a day from food. I still use Protein shakes, bars, etc., but mostly for convenience.

The only way I can drink Protein Shakes is making them myself. I use Bariatric foodies' recipes and they are so good! My fav is vanilla Protein Powder, frozen strawberries and coco and it's like a Neapolitan ice cream. I add add also to make it thick and its like a milkshake

I don't know what GNC outside of the US carries, or their policies, but in the US it is a good place to get Protein drinks and powders. Their policy is that you can return anything, and I have returned a lot as I was sampling drinks/powders.

I tend to stick with Isopure ready made drinks. They are a Gatorade-like Protein Drink. They are 20oz each and have 40g of Protein. It has zero carbs and 169 calories. It's not great, but tolerable. Everyone has different tastes.

Oh, and I'm curious. Where are you from?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
