Is there a ballpark of how much people lose on the pre-op liquid phase?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I have a tentative surgery date of 8/1 and 15 days pre-op on clear, SF liquids and Protein Shakes, along with a measly bite of a vegetable or one small piece of fruit.

I was just wondering if people have lost 10-20 lbs in the 2 weeks beforehand anything significant, or is it just like 5 lbs of Water weight?

I did 3 Protein shakes/day plus unlimited leafy greens. I lost 22 pounds in 16 days. But then I lost nothing the first couple weeks postop, so your body ends up sorting it all out in the end anyways.....

Just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try and remember this is not a race. The rate at which you lose has absolutely nothing to do with your overall long term success. In fact, it is much healthier to lose slower. The only thing you need to do is follow doctor's orders, stick with the plan and toss the scale in the back of the closet if the numbers start dictating your mood and behaviors.

I lost 25 lbs during my 2 week pre-op diet. This was without any form of exercise.

1st Week:

All the Water, tea and sugar free drinks you wannt

All the chicken broth you want

All the sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles you want

Breakfast and lunch is a Protein shake

dinner is lean, unbreaded meat on a bed of greens

2nd Week:

The same as week 1 but replace dinner with another Protein Shake.

The pre-OP liquid diet isn't intended for weight loss. It is intended to shrink your liver. The way it shrinks your liver is by depleting it of glycogen. Glycogen requires Water. So really, the bulk of the weight you lose will be Water weight.

While the minimal food intake will create a calorie deficit, it takes a colorie deficit of 3500 to lose a pound of actual fat. That means to lose 10 pounds of actual fat, you need a deficit of 35000 calories. It's highly unlikely that you create a calorie deficit of 2500 calories a day for those 2 weeks, and I definitely wouldn't recommend that you try.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

I maybe should have clarified, LOL, yes, of course, I'm dying to lose weight in any way I can, whether it be pre or post-op, but I went through all my thinner clothes yesterday to take inventory (size 10-22!) and am trying to maybe get some smaller clothing for losing weight and taking advantage of end-of-summer sales. I was only thinking of losing weight post surgery, but then realized pre-op might be significant, too.

No worries, I'm sure I'll be angry and crabby to the extreme liquids comes around, but I can't wait to start this new chapter in my life after surgery!

I lost 10 lbs during the pre-op liquid two week diet. That was after losing 44 lbs on the nutritionist's diet over the months preceding this.

I was only restricted to 1200 calories a day for the 2 week preop (last 2 days liquids) so I lost only a couple of pounds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
