LaliGator 0 Posted May 5, 2016 Hi guys! First, Congrats to everyone who made the choice to have the sleeve. My question is how soon where you told you can have soft solids? I've been on liquids 3 weeks and I'm struggling to get enough calories in. I'm trying to understand the logic in only being able to have liquids, but being ok to take super solid pain killers, multi-Vitamins, etc. If we're told that it could create a leak, why can't the pills and Vitamins create a leak? The bariatric nurses themselves gave me solid pain killers (Vicodin) to take. I had my surgery exactly a week ago, April 28 in Miami, Florida. I feel well, haven't had any nausea and have been able to tolerate all liquids I've had. I'm very grateful!!! Laura
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted May 5, 2016 My first week post-op was Clear Liquids, second week full liquids, third week soft, fourth week soft mechanical, etc. It may not make sense to you, but your surgeon's instructions are designed to help you heal and recover. What is your Protein target? Mine is 100 grams, so three premier Proteins got me 90% there. Early out I like premier, GNC Lean shake 25, Syntrax nectar, ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrate, ProtiDiet creamy chicken and Tomato basil Soups. It is hard, but do everything you can to follow your post-op instructions and get in all of your Protein and fluids.
KristenLe 5,979 Posted May 5, 2016 All programs are different. Mine has you on puree/soft foods much sooner than some others.
Miss Mac 6,262 Posted May 5, 2016 Three weeks for me. A pill will dissolve very quickly in your stomach and roll on through with your next drink. Bacon bits will get caught in your staple line and take longer to digest. Remember that you just had 85% of your stomach severed, and it is going to take longer to heal that a papercut would. Be patient, you'll get there. My first solid food was Wendy's chili with cheese, on the way home from the doctor's office. That small cup of chili lasted me four days! LaliGator 0 Posted May 5, 2016 Hi Miss Mac! Thanks! I would stay away from meats, I know they're tough to digest but not sure I understand the harm in a piece of avocado, mashed sweet potato or a scrambled egg. I'm having a hard time drinking more than 300- 400 calories and consequently feel weak. Wendy's chili with cheese sounds amazing! All in due time, I know. Bufflehead 6,358 Posted May 6, 2016 I had to wait two months. Did I like it? No. But I sucked it up and followed my doctor's orders. I had to tell myself over and over again that as much as I might think I know better than my bariatric team: 1. They've guided literally thousands of people from morbid obesity to healthy weight; 2. They have many advanced degrees and decades of experience between them in bariatric surgery, recovery, eating plans, and exercise 3. I was in charge of one person's nutrition and health (mine) and that person ended up morbidly obese and needing bariatric surgery 4. I have no advanced degrees or years of experience in bariatric practice ergo, I need to tell myself to shut up and listen to the people I trusted to perform major surgery on me and guide me to better health. Thinking I knew best and listening to my own advice didn't work out so well before.
minkornegay 0 Posted May 9, 2016 I had my surgery on April 13. 2016 and was on a liquid diet two weeks before surgery and two weeks after surgery. I was just placed on a purée diet a week ago for 4 weeks. I'm adjusting well to tuna, yogurt, fish, chicken, eggs. I mainly eat tuna and eggs. You can make it! Christinamo7 4,042 Posted May 9, 2016 I was on soft foods just about 10 days I think? at my one week check they said 10 days to two weeks (14 days), but my swelling went down quickly and I wanted something - scrambled egg was my first nibble. one bit was all I could handle but it was lovely. also had refried Beans that weekend.
