At Goal Weight For Sleeve Have EKG 5/9.

Recommended Posts

Okay, wow my journey took two big leaps. I went for psych eval and ended up seeing surgeon same day. See Case Manager, 5/9. Kaiser wants to sleeve me next month. So now my dad and aunt do not understand why I want surgery. Since I have lost weight on pre op diet. What have you guys done when faced with family who say they support but then they just do not get it. Thanks

I've proven many many times that I can lose weight......the sleeve is not just to help with the initial weight coming off but also to help you control portion sizes that will help to maintain later and keep it off......,it's the yo-yo I'm trying to fix!

People who are morbidly obese have a 5% success rate of keeping off weight lost with just diet & exercise. Maybe one of your family should go to a information session or to one of your visits.

What do you do when they don't understand?

You keep moving forward toward YOUR decision to build a healthier life.

My wife has supported me from day 1, but I also lost close to 30 lbs during the pre-op diet and even though she supported me, she questioned it.

I really don't think it's a question of support, but more of a question of fear. Anytime surgery is involved, as a parent or a family member, you worry, and I think that's what's happening here...

Time and education will help them. Let them know that this is for long-term success, and that you believe it's what's right for you....and reassure them of the success rates and let them know that you are excited and not scared...they'll come around!

Best of luck!

As someone who has lost 90 pounds TWICE but gained it back TWICE I completely understand the frustration when people see you can lose weight without surgery but then wonder why you still want surgery. My answer to this question is losing weight and keeping it off are two different things. My hope in getting WLS is that it will be a tool that will help me keep the weight off (I can lose just fine). Congrats on your pre op weight loss. I would just say that you need to be comfortable with the decision you want to make for your life. Your family should not be so focused on understanding why you want wls but they should be focused on supporting you in your journey. I don't always understand what my family members do with their lives but I will be there for them every step of the way. In this case you are trying to better yourself and your well being so I don't really see what's so hard to understand about that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
