Gastric Bypass (RNY) vs. Gastric Sleeve (VSG)

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of my weight loss surgery and I am looking for opinions on different surgeries. I was leaning toward bypass but now I am second guessing myself. Please help.

There are a ton of threads about this it might be helpful to read some of those.

but each surgery has it's good and bad. You will most likely have great success with either but you have to see which one is right for you. Talk to your surgeon and see what they recommend.

Both can be very successful and both have their pros and cons that apply to different people in different situations. Maybe if you give us a bit more information about you, we could better evaluate which is the best option. Though it's still really between you and your surgeon to decide. What is your current BMI? Do you have any comorbidities? Do you have diabetes? Do you currently experience acid reflux? Are you currently on any medications? What are your current issues with food? Are you a binge eater? Do you have a weak spot for sweets?

I am in the same boat as you. I really can't decide between the sleeve and bypass.

I would go to a Bariatric Program that is comprehensive and includes the entire Team (Psych, Nutritionist, Surgeon) and after meeting with them - you can all decide what's best for you. It will depend on your current medical issues and eating habits.

For me, the higher percentage of remediation of diabetes with bypass was the reason my surgeon felt it was the right operation for me, and I agreed with him. Read up on both surgeries and ask your surgeon his opinion. Best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
