I have no kids and I just turned 30 I have PCOS sleep apnea weight problems I'm 300 pounds I've been three hundred pounds for six years prior to that I lost a little bit of weight kept it off for a year-and-a-half had a size 18 215 pounds now I'm back to 300 for the last 6 years I really want to have kids my ovaries are not working properly and if I don't get this weight off I won't have kids. has anybody successfully had children after having weight loss surgery ??

I think I'm going to get the sleeve which will at least leave me 25% of my stomach so that my baby can hopefully get enough nutrition

I was told it was safe to have children after WLS and it's advised to wait 2 years. WLS does increase fertility so you need to be careful not to get pregnant before it's best. Learn all you can before deciding - it's a major life change. Good luck!

Absolutely. With weight loss surgery PCOS usually clears right up and any other weight related infertility issues go away. My dr actually recommended getting a backup birth control for the first year post op since your body becomes fertile pretty quickly but before the one year (or some say 18 months) mark it would be risky to be pregnant

there is a whole sub board on this site devoted to pregnancy after surgery that you might find helpful

It is absolutely safe to get pregnant post-WLS so long as you wait a good 1-2 years. As others have said, you need to be careful about getting pregnant TOO quickly, since you will likely have increased fertility pretty early on. You want to be sure you aren't pregnant before you are fully healed up and able to get proper nutrition. So it's best to wait at least a year.

As for actual pregnancy, I have read that pregnancy needs trump WLS needs. So you would want to switch to a prenatal Vitamin from your bariatric Multivitamin.

Thank you. I know the doctors say it's okay but I have yet to find many people , if any, whom actually had a baby after WLS. Wish I knew where to meet those people :)

I have someone in my Family who had great success with a baby about year year and a half after her bypass surgery. She always wanted a baby adopted her brothers daughter and thought, well that's it. Nope after she went from about 400 lbs down to 225 BAM!! It happened.

I had 3 children after my surgery. I had my surgery in 1996 Those were the days of opening you up no laparoscopy in those days. They kept me in the hospital an entire week. I found out I was pregnant made an appointment with my surgeon he chuckled and said be sure to take your Vitamins.

That baby was born in 1998, she is 17 I was 39.

My next baby was born in 2000, she is 15, I was 41.

My last baby was born in 2002, she is 13 now, I was 43.

All my girls were born healthy full term. I ate carefully. After my surgery I became lactose intolerance so I had to work harder to find dairy products I could eat. I can have small amounts of yogurt, cottage cheese and couple different types of cheese.

My pregnancies after my WLS were a walk in the park compared to before my WLS. Just so you understand the how resilient your body is I had six children before. So after WLS it brought the number of my brood to 9 children. And I am still married to their father, we have been married 30 years this June. If anyone wants to know more about this feel free to message me or I will try to answer any questions posted in comments.

As others have said, it is possible. I just wanted to add that if you know you want to get pregnant, the lap band may be best as you can unfill it when you do get pregnant so you can get more calories in for the baby, then after pregnancy fill up again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
