Really nervous about my endoscopy tomorrow...

Recommended Posts

I know they will give me something to relax beforehand, but I just can't see myself not freaking out and gagging to the point where they can't do the procedure. My surgeon wants me to have one because I have a hiatal hernia.

Has anyone had an endoscopy? How did it go?

I had one preoperative and I have the worst gag reflex! Can't do bite wing xrays at the dentist without gagging. They'll give you some diprovan and you won't remember any of it until you wake up in recovery.

I've never had to have one thank goodness but can't they knock you out just enough so you won't even know it's happening? I would ask! I'm having a colonoscopy in a couple months and I sure don't want to be awake for that. If they can knock me out for the other end they should be able to do the same for you.

OH - and FYI - my mom had a LARGE hiatal hernia that they found when they did her sleeve surgery. She had an endoscopy and it didn't show up.

Oh yeah. I was terrified but I was completely knocked out and they had no issues. Awake in recovery in about 10 minutes.

I had mine at the same session as my colonoscopy. I was out cold.

Mine's scheduled for June 6th, and I'm nervous about it too! People keep telling me I'm weird for being more nervous about the endoscopy than the surgery... but I've never had one before, while I've had surgery!

I'm choosing to believe that everyone is right, and I won't even know what's happening until it's over.

I am supposed to have one. My surgeon was talking about a Bravo pill instead. I had one 9 years ago when I had my gallbladder removed. A gallstone had gotten lodged in my bile duct and bile was leaking throughout my body. They had to go in and remove it. Not sure if my procedure was done wrong, or they needed it to do it this way since they were removing an obstruction, but I was fully aware of what was happening and could feel it moving around in my stomach. I just tried to remain calm and just focus on something else. Towards the end I did start to gag some as they removed the scope. Everyone else I speak to say this not their experience though.

I had a EGD. I think it's the same thing. They put me a twilight (basically I was out). It was over in what felt like seconds. You will be fine. Hang in there.

I had one also. Nothing to worry about. They put this little plastic thing in my mouth to guard my teeth and protect the camera thing. I remember thinking where do I put my tongue and then I was out!! Woke up 20 minutes later in recovery ate some ice chips and went home. A little throat soreness and sleepiness was all I had to deal later that day.

I had to have 2 because they found an ulcer on the first one. I have a strong gag reflex and was nervous but it was easy. Good drugs, poof you're out and what seems like seconds, it's all done.

I probably would have had problems too if they didn't put me in twilight for mine. I wasn't for sure when I went in if they were going to or not because reading online I guess they usually don't? I'm not sure why some do and some don't but I'm glad they did with me. I don't remember a thing other than them gassing me and waking up with a tingle in my throat and feeling really happy there for a bit after :) .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
