What does it feel like when you eat too much or too fast?

Recommended Posts

I'm Day 5 post-op VSG and my surgeon's guidelines allow me to have soft foods at this point. I've been doing just great with no discomfort, and have had small quantities of tuna salad and a scrambled egg with zero problems. So I'm not sure what it feels like when I go too far. I asked my surgeon and he just chuckled and said "you'll know".

OK, so I just had an ounce or so of hummus with two low-fat crackers, and I started feeling weird -- like I'm overheated and my heart was racing. (My heart rate has been up generally today, for whatever reason.)

So I'm wondering -- is that it? It seems to be passing after about 15 minutes and I'm not freaked or anything but I thought I'd get some outside perspective.

Thanks!

if I eat too much it feels like after Thanksgiving (that has happened exactly TWICE) and I have to lay down for about 20 minutes, or drink to encourage some to move on.

if I eat too fast or slightly too much or too big of a bite I get really burpy. so I have learned to back off and be satisfied with less.

Too far for me I can get one or all of the following really burpy, upper chest pain and feels like a band is tightening around my throat

Way too far (If I was stupid) I do all of the above, it hurts to swallow and my nose starts running and then vomiting soon follows.

These can happen if I eat too much or small amounts too fast.

It feels like I swallowed a goat, and Miss Tummy makes sure that I am miserable for hours.

I actually really struggle with telling the difference between too far and just full. I feel like I go from empty to full very quickly and have trouble feeling just satisfied.

I would say that there have been a few times where it feels like my chest is tight and I assume that means I went too far. I actually try to measure 1/4 cups and keep to that amount (I am 2 months out) so I don't go too far.

If I eat too fast or too much, I feel as if I'm suffocating from the inside out. My chest feels tight, but not like asthma. It feels as if an elephant is stomping on my rib cage and my mouth gets sweaty on the inside.

I either walk the steps, force a burp if at all possible, but I definitely remove myself from the room, because something is coming up or out.

I hate feeling full.

@silverthreads For me eating too fast feels like a traffic jam in my "food tube" ... like there are 10 cars trying to get in one lane of traffic and they all getting jammed up ... it's very uncomfortable ...

Lasts about 10 minutes ... and I know I'm eating too fast ... but it's an old habit ... and it's one I've just not broken yet ...

I haven't eaten too much at one time yet ... Because of the traffic jam feeling ... I stop eating ...

I'll get there!

I dont want to scare you and with all my respect to your doctor but I think it is way too early to start the food you are eating now, you heart rate increases which is one of a red flag sign (that what I have been told) so why don't you go with liquids and Soups for at least three weeks until you stomach heals a little bit better!

Stomachs are the same everywhere, i think it is not up to the surgeon to decide it is ready unless he did endoscopic study on you and cleared you out for that kind of food!!!

Just be careful please!!

depends on the food. usually if I eat too much I get very nauseated and will probably throw up. Sometimes I can tell I will throw up when I burp and get that vomit taste in the back of my throat....then I know I need to run to the bathroom.

Thanks everyone who posted -- I appreciate your support.

I actually think I've found the cause and it was a surprise: my Centrum Silver chewable vitamins! I've had similar episodes once each day and I realized this morning that it could be the Vitamins so I took one without any food -- and sure enough I'm back to the same symptoms.

When I was in my 20's I found out that I had an extreme reaction of flushing and racing pulse when I took one of the B Vitamins that a doctor friend had given me to try. I'm thinking that by chewing these up I'm getting too much of something at once, so I'm going to go back to the regular "swallow" style I've been using without problems for years.

I'm otherwise doing truly great, and glad I started down this path.

@@mia150 I thank you kindly for your concern.

I've worked with thousands of doctors over the years, and if there is anything I've learned it's that medicine (and especially surgery) is an art as much as it is a science. That's why they keep doing more research to see what works well, etc. I chose my surgeon carefully -- he's world class and one of the pioneers of the duodenal switch surgery (he also does liver transplants -- no slouch he!). He's had thousands of patients and I'm following his standard protocol which seems to be working just fine for me. Today is 1 week from surgery and I'm off all pain meds, have pretty good energy, I'm getting in my Protein and fluids, and I've lost 12 pounds.

I should also mention that I'm only allowed a limited variety of soft foods (e.g. scrambled egg, soft fish, refried beans) and I'm being careful with each new food as I introduce it.

You may have noticed in my just previous post that I've identified the culprit for my symptoms -- the Vitamin I was taking. That just takes a small adjustment...

All the best, and good luck on your journey.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
