I am a wk into my 2 wk pre op diet. Basically only Protein shakes, broth, sf Jello and Popsicles. Today is the first day that I have had to deal with MAJOR Constipation (pain, sweats). I called my nut and she said mirolax. Any other suggestions from people going through this or have gone through this. This is the first time I have ever dealt with constipation. Tia

Sorry to hear you're dealing with Constipation pre-op @mmorris4. Luckily, I didn't deal with pre-op, but post-op I did as the anesthesia and pain meds can cause it, along with just not putting that much food into your body. Miralax worked wonders for me and I am a little over 2 weeks post-op and I still use it about 3 times per week to help stay regular for now. There are a lot of different over the counter solutions for constipation. If your NUT recommended miralax, I would try that first and if it doesn't work, as them for another suggestion but definitely address it and keep them in the loop with anything you are taking to help you! Good luck!

I had to do a trial 2 week liquid diet before even meeting my surgeon, and I had some troubles during it with Constipation. I started drinking more Water, and around day 12 or so, it all kind of worked itself out... Literally  Relief will come!

Dude. I cannot stop having diarrhea. It's awful. I feel for you though. I used to only poop maybe twice a week.

If you never had Constipation before, then Miralax should work and it's OTC. Post-op you'll have constipation again for the same reason you are now, liquid diet and hardly any solids can form in your bowels. You might want to get liquid docusate sodium post op. It won't make you have a BM, but when you do you shouldn't have to strain and put undue pressure on your abdomen.

I always relied on prune juice. Today, I had to drink warm prune juice and miralax to flush myself out.

I'm doing the 100% liquid diet for 2 weeks. I add a little Benefiber powder to my morning shake. It's the kind that can be stirred into any liquid, even Water, and it's just clear & invisible. It keeps things moving at the right pace.

When I really feel backed up and need to make something happen, I drink a cup of Smooth Move tea by Traditional Medicinals. Lots of stores carry this tea (my Kroger has it), and you can find it in health food stores, too.

Miralax is amazing! I use it because I have chronic Constipation. I use the generic equivalent because it cheaper.

I'm sorry that you are in such pain. I do know how it feels. Hang in there. Keep up fluids and sometimes brisk walking can help get you moving.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
