Hi, I am about two weeks out from my pre-op psychiatrist interview, and was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect. I am mostly nervous that they are gonna find a reason that I can't have the surgery, even though I really don't think there is any reason. My estimated surgery date is mid-July. Thanks for any input and for all the great topics on this site! I don't have a really strong support system in my house (since I live alone), so I am very grateful this site is here. jkiepke

It is nothing to worry about. They just want to make sure you are mentally ready for surgery and not just thinking that surgery is an easy way out.

Generally they are interested in identifying any underlying condition that may prevent you from successfully losing weight after weight loss surgery. And if so provide you with a support network to help you succeed. So just answer the questions honestly.

Yeah I definitely did not come across as the most well adjusted person in the world but she passed me anyways. I think they are on your side and are only going to say you can't have the surgery if there was like a serious issue that came up. One of the riskiest things would be to perform this surgery on someone who can't follow directions. So they need to make sure you are motivated and capable of doing so and provide you with additional resources to help when necessary.

I, too, am anxious about the psychological visit. I am bipolar,, but have been stable for over 2 years on medicine. One doctor told me that it might prevent me from being accepted. I'm really worried. Does anyone know if this will stop me from continuing? I'm new to this site.

I just had mine is past Tuesday. I was in and out in a half hour (or less) she passed me. She just asked me about my weight, dieting, how am I changing my life now, have I ever been depressed because of my weight, and what I'm expecting to get from surgery and why I'm wanting to get it.

Best bet is be 100% honest. I think if you are on meds and have whatever disorder you have under control you should be fine..

I am surprised you were denied outright without a plan to address your issues/barriers to success.

Rather than lying, why not ask for help developing a plan to help you deal with the fact that being around food post-op will be a challenge?

That's an interesting situation you're in. I know someone that's a cook and he hardly feels hungry during mealtimes because he has to sample the seasoning and flavors numerous times throughout cooking. As far as I know, restaurant food is calorie, salt, and fat dense and will not be good for you. bmi.png

Many people diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and bipolar have all passed their psych eval. They just want to make sure you are highly functioning and coping well with your condition(s) and have realistic expectations of your WLS. I live alone too, and they were aware I have zero family support. But I had supportive friends who accompanied me on my surgery day and were there post-op to help me. My coworkers also checked up on me and wanted me back at work already! Try to relax (even though it's easier said than done), the vast majority of people pass. bmi.png

They want to make sure you understand what is about to happen and make sure you are mentally able to handle it and have proper support. Be honest and strong. You will be fine. Mine took about two hours. Walked out feeling abused but was approved for surgery

Agreed

I've heard people being considered an emotional eater which will cause you to fail. Be honest or extra prepared to make the difficult changes.

When you go the psychiatrist is going to ask you questions about yourself the main thing I think they are trying to find out is if you thought this through and if you are ready for a life change.

I agree with you. I suffer with depression and I passed my psych eval.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
