When did you start to exercise?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Im two weeks post op now. Have being doing short walks when the energy level allows. Was wondering when you went back to "proper" exercise like a jog or long walk. I am still a bit tender below the ribs to belly button both sides, and energy is still intermittently quite low, so Im not expecting to go for a jog this afternoon, but want to push myself a bit when its time.

When did you FIRST FEEL like you were ready to do a good workout (given the obvious limitations of lifting/movement etc)?

Thanks!

I could walk at a normal pace as soon as I went home. I walked 2 miles on Day 3 or 4, and felt great. Was cleared for all exercise at about 3.5 weeks. I had pretty much no pain after Day 4 or 5, just mainly stomach discomfort. I guess I had some tenderness at home, but it was pretty minimal. I did my first real workout with a trainer around Day 28, but I think I could have started jogging sooner, but my surgeon only cleared me for walking before then.

I started walking 1/4 mile 2 X per day 4 days post op. I was walking literally a 30 minute mile at first, I gradually increased distance and pace. My goal was (is) 6 days a week, which I rarely reach, but try to anyway. By my 3 week check up I was cleared for all activity.

I was up to my normal speed walking almost as soon as I got out of the hospital, although I couldn't go as far and usually took a nap after each walk during the first two weeks. I walked a 5k (3.1 miles) reindeer run 3.5 weeks after surgery and finished in under an hour, which was about the same time I had done a 5k in September. (Surgery was in November). I didn't start running until after January 1 because the holidays got in my way, but I swam laps as soon as they cleared me for the pool at about 4 weeks.

The big thing is to listen to your body. There was a run in mid February where my left side near my largest incision started hurting when I ran. (not bad just letting me know it was there) As long as I only walked it was fine, so I didn't run and finished my time walking instead. When I went back a few days later for my next run, it didn't bother me so I ran as planned. I don't know what might have happened if I kept pushing through the pain. Maybe nothing, but I wasn't willing to risk it.

Good luck and be patient.

I tried my best to go for walks at the park a few days after getting home on 4/15 surgery date was 4/13. I could say I was walking 30 minutes 4 times a weeks. After my post up 2 week follow up I was approved to start doing exercise such as walking on a treadmill and elliptical. However, I've felt really lazy and tired a lot more than the first few days after surgery so haven't really done much exercise. At my last appt I was told I was slightly anemic. I'm worried that maybe i'm more anemic as I am having symptoms like pale skin, dizziness, and am so tired!

Thanks everyone, I've certainly not been doing as well as you guys!!! I'm 2 weeks post op and have just been pottering around the house and walking up to the street to get milk most days! My first week post op was pretty damn awful - I'm not sure I could have found my way to the mailbox let alone walk 5 miles!! I'm a band to bypass revision and had quite a lot of scar tissue dug out of me too so not sure if that has slowed my recovery a little too?

I have been using my Fitbit to keep track of my steps and trying to get 500 more in every day to ensure an increase in activity level every day. I return to work next Tuesday and don't want to be taking naps at lunch time in my car LOL

Well done to you all though - pretty awesome effort considering what your bodies have been through...... And congrats on all of your weight loss - simply amazing!!

Hey @yanu17leth I am on a daily Iron supplement. Did your Dr prescribe you one? If not I think you can get over the counter.....

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
