ANYONE every appeal a plan with an exclusion for weight surgery and got approved !

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm just wondering if anyone ever got a policy that excludes weight loss to cover their surgery after an appeal? I'm so upset was in my 4th month of 6 supervised diets and my fiancé lost his job so there goes my coverage, my job actually excludes weight loss, And I was just wondering if anyone has ever gotten their ins to cover it after and appeal are something even though it was an exclusion, my advocate thinks I should go ahead and finish the six months in case I get coverage again, but I was thinking about finishing it and then appeal through my ins, so was just curious, thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear about your situation but it's an exclusion so you won't have a chance to appeal because it's not a benifit on your policy. Many employers optout of the coverage (if state law allows) to save money, I think a lot of insurance companies put the enclosing in with out the employer relizing it. Some doctors offer a substantial discount if you have a hernia that's needs requires surgery or look into the Mexico option. Another option is to see if any policies on the health care exchange offer coverage.

Confirm what that means for weight loss to be excluded. I read a policy that indicate weight loss programs were excluded but not Bariatric Surgery. You may want to talk with your plan administrator. I would go through with the visits - as they should count even if you get a new plan next year.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
