one week post op general questions!

hello everyone i am one week post op and I've been feeling great so far!

so far i lost 5 kg only in one week! which is scaring the crap out of me, I'm on a clear liquid diet but still fell very hungry at times. i still don't know if its hunger or cravings or what. Water makes me nauseous but i manage 1500ml a day i can drink other liquids fine.

i have a few questions i hope you guys can help me with:

1. when can i start working out? and whats the best way to start, can i jump to regular working out or should i start with walking?

2. when can i have Protein powder and is it bad to drink Protein shakes without working out? ( i went to purchase some Protein Powder and the guy refused to give me any, he said you can't take any Protein Powder without working out or lifting is that true???)

3. what kinds of liquid food is recommending in this stage?

4. and last; does it make a difference how much the doctor removes from the stomach? is it possible for him to not remove enough of the stomach for this surgery to work?

Whoever told you you can't use Protein powder without working out is wrong, wrong, wrong. He's clearly never met anyone who has had bariatric surgery.

Don't return to working out without your surgeon's OK. Walking should be fine.

Check the guidelines from your surgeon to see what is and is not allowed at this stage.

If you think you're hungry at this stage, it's either excess acid or head hunger, could be both.

These are the types of answers you'd best get from your surgeon and nutritionist. They usually have very specific instructions to follow for your safety and the overall effectiveness of your new lifestyle.

I'll simply throw out my opinions here.....and I'm not medically trained or all that savvy on this stuff....just a guy who's living happily with his sleeve, okay?

I reserve the right to be wrong and to make my share of post op mistakes.

1) I was encouraged to begin walking two hours after coming to in the recovery room. Walking and then after one week give other types of cardio a try....then allowed to weight train after letting my simultaneous hernia repair heal properly. The sleeve was ready for weights way before my hernia repair was.

2a) You should be drinking shakes the day after your surgery, in my experience. They gave me an ounce an hour the first day. Four ounces an hour the second.....an upwards until I was getting three shakes a day in. I lived that way until after being cleared to advance to the next stages of eating.

2b) The guy you attempted to purchase protein powder from was a complete idiot. He should seek other employment. Some of the absolute worst broscience comes from the dudes who work at GNC. I think they must be trained special to be that stupid. Look around for low carbohydrate protein powders. There is a wide range of good options.....and bad options (avoid the stuff made for hard gainers....highly caloric).

3) Low carb Protein Shakes.

4) I think most of us report on having 75% to 85% of our stomachs removed. I don't know how much of a factor the exact percentages translate to in terms of weight loss. I do know that the lack of hunger and the restriction are motivators to not push the limits, but to eat the recommended volumes at each meal and no more than that.

I highly encourage you to make a followup appointment with your surgeon and contact your nutritionist right away. Meet with them or call them....have them respond to your questions immediately so you can be safe and enjoy the benefits of the surgery you just had.

1. You should only be doing "birsk walking" to start out. I wasn't cleared for more intense exercise until 2 months post-op. You should discuss this restriction with your surgeon.

2. That guy is an idiot! Of course you should be drinking Protein shakes while you recover. None of us are working out in the first few weeks post-op. Some people never work out at all. But we all need to get our Protein in and shakes are the only way to do that in the early months!

3. You should have been given a food stage schedule by your surgeon or nutritionist. At one week out I was on "full liquids" which included Protein Shakes, strained cream Soups, and yogurt.

4. There is speculation on whether sleeve size affects how much weight on can lose and how hard it is to maintain, but the conventional wisdom is that long term results are pretty consistent across the board and that slight differences in sleeve size don't really matter.

Start with walking and talk to your surgeon about when you are cleared for more strenuous exercise.

He is nuts. You should be getting in protein now, whether it is with a clear protein supplement (Syntrax nectar, ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates, Isopure, etc.), bone broth, or other protein supplement allowed by your surgeon. My surgeon allowed Premier Protein during the clear phase. The salesperson is insane. I am assuming he is not a doctor or registered dietitian and at the very least is ignorant and ill-informed. Refusing to sell you something unless you meet his criteria sounds like a power trip to me.

As far as I know, when you are sleeved, the surgeon removes the fundus (the stretchy part of the stomach). It isn't what is removed that is the most important thing, but what is left -- a functioning stomach that is about the size of a small banana and won't stretch. You won't really feel the restriction until you get to solid foods, so don't worry.

He told me that I'm going to damage my liver by doing so and scared me out of it!

i had 70% off my stomach removed and I'm worrying that it won't have the full effect.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
