I think the general consensus is about 6 weeks out from surgery if you're going to develop any. But that would also be if you weren't walking and staying active.

So make sure you're walking around the house through the day and once you get back to work, walk around at least a few minutes every hour or so.

As long as you're getting up and moving throughout the day, you are at a significantly smaller risk of getting them.

I was advised that the frequency of the walking was crucial, too.

Surgeon said, sure, going on a long walk is great.....but it's important to get up and move every couple hours, too. Stay active is what he emphasized.

I'm not sure what the normal time window is for the post-op concerns.

I think the greatest risk is the first three weeks, and then it tapers off, but the risk is generally about 3 months, and a lesser risk remains up to a year. Just keep moving, frequently. Call your doc for any worrisome symptoms.

Why is the risk so high post-op?

Blood clots can be formed from an "injury" and in this case that's surgery. It also can be from lack of mobility (common after surgery). If you think you have the symptoms of a blood clot - call your surgeon immediately. Moving around frequently can minimize the risk and compression stockings can as well.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
