New Member - Researching Lap Band/rny

Recommended Posts

I just came upon this website because I am researching lap band versus rny and would like to know the effect of the lap band on diabetes. I am leaning towards the lap as it is minimally invasive. Any insights from diabetics will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much, Khadija.

Hi Khadija,

Nice to meet you. There are several people on this site who have been able to reduce or quit several of their medications and I know some of them related to diabetes. Good luck on your research, Teresa

Hello Khadija, I was on 2000mg of Glucovance a day. I haven't needed it since surgery, The Doc said that I probably won't need it as my weight drops and I get more active because I feel better.

Hope this helps. I, like you, did a lot of research on both surgeries, and I have an insight that many others do not. My wife had rny in February of 2002, and I have seen both the positive and negative side to it. This knowledge, and this site, were instrumental in my decision to get the band. When my wife said "If the band had been available to me at the time I would have gotten that instead of the rny." that clinched it.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I have recently found this site. It is very informational. I enjoy reading the excerpts. Situations and issues brought up in this that i haven't heard of through the dr. or support group.

I am 36 yrs old, currently going thru this at St. Memorial in Lowell, ma. My dr. is dr. chen. I am undecided also on the lap or rny. Which making up my mind is not an easy thing, I am a Libra. I have gone thru all my lab tests. My biggest problem is getting my sugar under control, I am currently on pills to regulate. I too am interested in any diabetics opinions and how they are making out also.

Thank you

welcome minny! please feel free to read, read, read all the posts you possibly can. there is so much good information here just for the taking. if there is something specific, there's always someone willing to try to find an answer for you too! you may want to post an introduction for yourself in the Introduction forum so that everyone knows you are new and we can learn a bit about you. Good luck on your decisions!

Welcome, Khadija! And Minny, I'm a Libra, too, so I can totally understand how hard it is to make a solid decision! The damn scales in our heads just gotta be perfect, don't they? I'm having a lot of problems with my band. But I'd do it all over again if I had to. I learned there's a 4% morbidity rate for gastric bypass patients, and the LapBand is under 1%. Considering my bad luck, 4% is pretty scary.

Hi Minny,

I was recently mid-banded and i'm a insulin taking diabetic. My insulin intake is 10% of what it used to be and i've dropped one of the pills (Metformin)

best of luck

Ian

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
