Viactive Calcium Plus Vitamin D chocolates

Recommended Posts

Just putting in a plug for Viactiv Calcium Plus Vitamin D chocolates. They aren't as good as good chocolates, but as a Vitamin or mineral supplement goes, they are actually pretty tasty.

Sugar is pretty low at 3g per chew, and coadministration of 500IU Vitamin D with 500mg of Calcium should provide good uptake. This product also contains 40 micrograms of Vitamin K, which they say promotes formation of bone Proteins and cite scientific articles from a prestigious source (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) to back that up. It seems to be a quality product and is inexpensive compared to some alternatives as well - only about $12 per 100 count.

They sell chocolate and caramel flavors - I have the milk chocolate, and rather than choking them down, kind of need to watch myself or I will keep eating them...

P.S. Oops, looks like I misspelled the name - it's Viactiv

One thing to keep in mind is that the Viactiv chews are made with Calcium carbonate, and some surgeons want post-op people to have calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. Apparently there is an issue as to whether a post-sleeve stomach can properly absorb carbonate.

I personally avoid the controversy by not taking any calcium supplements, but I'm a rebel that way ;)

The NUT at my program, and the surgeon, all stress at every class CaCitrate for BYPASS (bypass and sleevers are in the same classes and groups together) because of the absorbtion. They have told us multiple times and in all the literature they gave us that Ca Carbonate is fine for sleevers, and my NUT specifically has told us that the Viactiv is great for sleevers only.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
