Hi.

I had a lap band in 2008 but have regained a lot of weight that I lost. I want to have the band removed because of possible future complications. I am considering getting bypass surgery. I am in good health with a BMI of 35. Does anyone know if bypass surgery is done at this age? I have heard that some surgeons won't do it.

Thanks for any opinions or information that you may have

Gaylene

My mom is 66 and she had the sleeve done in March. I know there are people on the boards who are over 65 who have had it done. I think what might make it difficult for the over 65 crowd is if they have a lot of other health conditions. As long as it's safe for you to have surgery I don't see why they wouldn't do weight loss surgery on you.

My husband just turned 65 and he is being sleeved. ..TOMORROW! ! AAGH! He had to jump through a lot more hoops than I had to (my sleeve date is May 11!!) because I am "only" 56. He's excited and optimistic and looks forward to putting his diabetes is remission. Good luck!

@@SusanB55, we have some things in common. I will be 56 in June, my surgery date is May10th (but I am having bypass) and I am also 5'5". Good luck to you! @@Gaylene Davison - my surgeon told me he had a 74yo woman who was very healthy and she had the surgery with no complications at all. I don't know if she had sleeve or RNY but he said she was an exception and he would not as a rule perform WLS on someone that age. It just depends on their health and motivation.

I was sleeved at 68, and I know my surgeon did RnY (bypass) on a male patient who was 71 or 72.

Wow!

This is all very encouraging. Thank you for the replies.

I am seeing my surgeon on Monday to discuss options. I don't know how the process will go re pre op diet etc if I go ahead with band removal.

Can anyone enlighten me on that?

Did you have to go through liquid diet before band removal?

How are you feeling as your surgery date gets closer? Honestly, I am scared to death and at times, I feel like backing out. We are leaving for hubby's surgery is 10 minutes. I feel nauseous.

To be perfectly honest, I am not nervous at all at this point. Met with my surgeon today, he is one of the best and I have complete confidence in him and everyone I talk to raves about him. I was nervous for months when I was trying to decide if I was doing the right thing or not but once my decision was made - no longer nervous. Just so excited to make this change to better my health. Let me know how your hubby makes out - I'm sure both of you will do great!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
