Intense pain 2 weeks post op

Recommended Posts

Just had a really intense experience. Boyfriend made a really tender, soft pork loin and wet scrambled eggs for Breakfast. I took about an ounce of pork and 1/3 cup of eggs. Chewed well. Everything went down really nice and I stopped before I felt full.

A couple of minutes later, some REALLY intense pain started in my stomach. Like, a 10 out of 10. It was difficult to breathe, and nothing I could do would ease the pain. I got hot and sweaty. There was no stuck feeling in my throat, no nausea. No overfilled feeling. I tried making myself throw up to see if that would ease it. I threw up a couple of bites but that was it. All I could really do was whimper and pace around. After about 10-15 minutes, it let up as fast as it had come on. Is this what dumping syndrome feels like? Has anyone else experienced this? That was awful!

I assume my stomach just isn't ready for the pork, but that was scary and not my typical response to "not ready for that" food. Usually it feels heavy and stuck after I swallow if I'm not ready for it. I'm on the mechanical diet phase and was encouraged to try meats if they were moist and soft or chopped finely. So far I've had cubes of chicken and shrimp that I tolerated well, so this wasn't a new texture.

Did you wait 30 minutes after drinking before you ate? No drinking during? It could of been dumping if you didn't do those things. If you did, then I'm not sure what happened.

No drinking during the meal. Only a few sips before.

Nope, that wasn't dumping. I would say hold off on the pork, sounds like your stomach wasn't ready for it.

I am seven weeks out, I couldn't have handled that volume, myself. I have tried pork (tenderloin, and in meatballs) and didn't have a problem with it.

One thing I learned (probably from a poster here) is to take one bite of a new food and wait about ten minutes to see how it sits before proceeding. It was great advice and I wish I knew who to thank.

I'd say your sleeve is definitely not ready. I was on liquids for 3 weeks then slowly transitioned through purées and soft food. It was at least 6-7 weeks before I'd even consider eating something like pork, no matter how much I chewed it.

It takes 6-8 weeks for your staple line to heal and I treated mine like a newborn baby so I would not tear anything. I certainly wouldn't feed a 2 week old pork! And I never had any nausea or pain or a stuck feeling and I never vomited. Your surgeon's postop plan would have been far too aggressive for me.

Lesson learned. I'm going to go with "not ready" even though permissible. I'm just glad I was at home and not at a restaurant when it happened. I almost passed out :/

In addition to maybe not being ready for pork, that also sounds like an awful lot of volume to me. I'm 2 weeks out and our NUT says at this point (and for the next few weeks), our volume should be 1.5-3oz per meal. The range is because different volumes will fill you up differently. For example, she says she would expect us to only be able to eat (as an example) 1.5 oz of chicken, but 3 oz of refried Beans. One large egg is consistently 2 oz when I weigh it after scrambling and it alone fills me up...yesterday I tried chicken...2 oz filled me up and felt like a bit too much as well. So it might have been a volume issue as well? Sounds like you were pretty miserable, hope it doesn't happen again.

I agree. I didn't start eating eggs until 3 weeks out, but it was at least 2-3 months before I could eat a whole one. 6 months before I could finish a whole container of Greek yogurt or a whole Quest bar. Boy, I sure miss that kind of restriction :(

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
