Soft foods and whining

Recommended Posts

I don't really have a question, I just wanted to share to a group of people that understand this process.

Today was one of my toughest days yet. On my program, we go to soft foods at 2 weeks post op. My surgery was on April 14. Eating has been very uncomfortable. I feel bloated and just icky. My body seems handle poultry ok, but food is so unappealing. I never thought I would feel that way about food. Getting my Protein is such a chore, I have returned to drinking Protein shakes for Snacks. I know it's worth it, but it is very challenging emotionally. I want to feel "good" and "normal" again.

I am still excited that I am making positive change. I can feel my relationship with good changing so much. Thanks for reading my complaining and ramblings

It took me around 6 months after RNY gastric bypass surgery to reach my happy state. This is a short article about my experience. It includes recipes at the end. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

You came to the right place! The first few weeks are tough. It is worth it and it does get easier, but I know that doesn't help right now. I likened mine to my prior shoulder surgeries or my hysterectomy where I just had to "deal" and "get through" those first 6 weeks while my body healed. The food being unappealing really adds to everything though. My first food for pureed was Ricotta Bake http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html It seriously tasted like heaven to me. I could only eat maybe 2 Tbsp in the beginning so you aren't even getting that much nutrition from it but it makes you feel more normal. I also love fat free refried Beans with cheese melted on top. I still at almost 11 months post-op eat these some days. I also still have a Protein shake every day. I use Premier Protein ready made drinks mostly and I actually look forward to it. It's like drinking chocolate milk and it gives me a sweet fix. Don't worry about still relying on these for your Protein. It is perfectly fine.

I promise you will look back on this post in a few months or even in a year and smile.

Best wishes to you! Hang in there!

Thank you for the encouragement. It's amazing what a night of sleep and a Protein shake can do for you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
