How do I ask my doctor?

Recommended Posts

You TELL the PCP, you don't ask. It's your body and your decision. Opinions and or support are one thing, but it's not up to them. They can be on board and help or just keep any negativity to themselves. If they can't, go elsewhere.

I agree 100% with Recycled you tell your PCP about your decision. It is your health and your decision if they do not want to support you then you need to find a PCP that will.

I told my PCP and he was a bit shocked (because we had never discussed it and my surgery was the next week) but said ultimately it was my decision. When I got back I followed up with him; 30 some odd pounds down in a month and he told me he felt I made a great decision and plans on helping me lose all my weight during the honeymoon phase.

My old PCP wasn't on board. I asked her years ago to help me with WLS. I didn't know anything about the process. When I knew this is what I wanted, I found a new Dr.

I mean she wasn't very familiar with centers to refer me to because the one she gave (which she googled) had really bad reviews. Plus she told me I should do a program which I guess I wouldn't be opposed to since there a 6 month waiting period. But I found a better Bariatric Center and will call them tomorrow because I missed their call today. ( which they call me within 20 minutes of my inquiry) it's looking good right now :)

Ecorren: I'm glad your doctor is on board. I used this site to help me pick a place to go to. I looked a what people said about the doctors there and also how well they liked the center. I go to my first informational session tomorrow

Great plan and good job looking for your own center.....most centers have weekly seminars for new patients to attend. Good luck and keep up all updated on your progress!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
