When I was a 35 y/o Army officer a brand new recruit was assigned the task of taking everyone's height and weight with the unit's scale. The trooper was an innocent looking 18 y/o woman who said my height was an inch shorter than I expected. I said she must have made a mistake. She earnestly looked into my eyes and said "you know Sir, you shrink as you get older" (clearly I was ancient in her eyes). Certainly my ego shrunk instantly! I ordered her to check again and was vindicated.

22 years later, I have lost that inch. The little bi**h proved right after all!

I was nearly 5' 11" my entire life, then in 2001 I had a lumbar fusion and suddenly I was 5'10". In June I had a 3 level cervical fusion and now I am 5' 9 3/4"

I mean seriously can I stop shrinking please! Hubby thinks it's funny, I do not. I like my height.

I actually grew a half inch when I had my 3 level cervical fusion in 2009......I kept that half inch for several years but now I'm back to 5'5"

Something to keep in mind... BMI does calculate based on actual height, but lots of practices use the MetLife height/weight tables to determine "ideal" weight, so the "excess" weight can be determined. If you do use the MetLife tables they measure height in one inch heels, so you would add an inch to your actual height when using them.

They are ridiculously optimistic in determining what ideal weight is, but many practices use them as the baseline to figure what your excess weight is, and how much of your excess you can expect to lose.

@@KindaFamiliar and @@Valentina you both had me cracking up. Good stuff.

You aren't kidding....those tables are ridiculously optimistic indeed.

I can't see me....at 6'4" getting down to the weight listed on that chart (181 lbs - 207 lbs). That's another 100 lbs or so off my frame. I'd look like a skeleton.

I say that....but that's what it would take for me to reach a 25 bmi. Maybe the chart is not so outlandish.

I need to go break out the tape measure and see if I'm even still 6'4".

I began the bariatric process last June. I was shocked to learn during that initial appointment that I was 6'4". I'd always been and inch taller.

Oh well.......at least I'm normally tall enough to get the job done once I go horizontal...............

Every time I go to the doctor they get a different measurement. Over the last 5 years or so I've been as tall as 5' 6.75" & as short as 5' 4". I KNOW that 5' 4" was just the nurse writing it down incorrectly because she did not say that. For now I'm sticking with the 5' 6" I was around my birthday last year & won't get measured more often than once a year.

I haven't been measured in years - but last time I was it was 5'4 1/2 - I was very proud of that 1/2 :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
