I attended a educational seminar on bariatric surgery first step on 4/16 I have my first appointment on May I'm very nervous and don't know what to expect. Alot of people are against it saying I'm going to regret it just eat less and exercise but I've been dealing with my weight since I was a child and have struggled with it until now and I'm 22 years old. Anyone whose never had a weight problem will never understand.

Unfortunately, a lot of us have had the same thing said to us.... me included....

Hell, i even said it to myself.... i even tried, like really tried but can admit i failed, hence why i decided to go ahead with it.

I was sick of my weight holding me back, sick of yoyo dieting, sick of my life revolving around my weight, food and clothes.

What made the decision for me was that i had lost weight... (with the band) and pretty much gained most of it back once i had it removed... i realised then i cant do it on my own, that i needed help.

Initially i was dead against it, thinking its extreme to cut out your stomach for my weight... that i must be so vain to do it when i am only 220 pounds.... but you know what..... i needed it....

My weight holds me back, emotionally and mentally and even socially.... ive been on both ends of the scale (literally)... and my body and health is much happier on the lower end.

Do whats right for you... it is your life... your choice... your journey.. your body.... if you are not happy with it.... then it's up to you... no one can tell you what to do... if it feels right... go for it.

Yeah it is difficult when you do not have the support... but unfortunately in life there will always be naysayers and people who do not understand.

You are only 22.. you are young and have your whole life ahead of you.

Ask yourself this... do you want to spend the next 20 years battling your weight, diabetes, blood pressure, aching joints etc that come from being obese?

Or would you rather do something about it (with or without) support and do whats right for you..... it wont be easy... but in hindsight you will look back and your body, self esteem and health will thank you for it.

One thing i have learned... support of your friends and family is wonderful.... but it does not change your journey if you are motivated to change your life.. it only enhaces it.... we can not rely on other people for our happiness.... it comes from within.

Feel free to come chat with us anytime... we are all in the same boat... going through all the struggles and victories together (hugs)

Bariatric surgery is no easy way out. Because getting 80% of your stomach removed is not an easy thing for your body or your mind. You might even feel regret the first few weeks.

I am two months out and just one year older than you, I also had been struggling with my weight for a long time. I already have lost around 46pounds, I went back to sport and it actually felt great instead of just feeling like a damn punishment. It's only been two months and I can see many differences.

Good luck in your journey, your body is yours and if you feel that the surgery is your only help, don't let people who have no idea what's it like to be fat and obese to tell you otherwise.

Maybe take one of the people closest to you to a seminar so they can understand better. It's scary for those that love us. Talk to them about why you want surgery and hopefully they'll understand. You need to understand that surgery is just a tool to help you - you have to completely change your lifestyle and eating habits. Get help with any eating issues now -/binging, emotional eating, etc and you'll be successful and get to live a long, healthy and happy life!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
