First week after surgery

Recommended Posts

I was told you have to follow the diet because you have to give everything a chance to heal.

I have surgery 5/25 but I have meetings with people that have had the surgery and I pay close attention to what they say form experience.

Hope all is good for you

I'm on a 3 week liquid diet and I'm also only 1 week post op! I had my follow up appointment today and we talked about now I'm on a full liquid diet which is no different from a clear liquid diet except now I can have a Protein shake. I even asked about sugar free pudding and he said no because a lot of people have milk intolerance after surgery and I shouldn't risk vomiting or any other discomfort. Then I asked about applesauce and he said no too much sugar. Lastly I asked about liquidy oatmeal and he said no too many carbs. I'm just like what the hell this is going to be a nightmare. My doctor also advised I shouldn't have fruit period, like ever, due to the amount of natural sugar in fruit. I'm trying to be optimistic but I don't want to fail because of all these restrictions.

Wow, I thought my doctors were strict. They say all of hose things trying to keep you from any discomfort. I just tried little bitty bits of things to see if it would bother me. Nothing has so far. Good luck. But around day 7... I had Greek yogurt. Even washing my hair was wearing me out.

My surgeon advocates for 2 weeks liquids (anything you can fit through a straw), then two pureed. I have pretty much stuck to this but admit I have also had some Greek yogurt and cottage cheese but chewed both well until they were Fluid in my mouth before swallowing. The idea of the liquids is to stop you from stretching the pouch prematurely with whole foods and of course reduce the chance of blockages given the swelling. So if you are bored of liquids sure have some yogurt or creamed cottage cheese, but make sure it well "mixed" and Fluid like in your mouth before you swallow.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
