Pre-op diet or "Why do I smell bad?!? And will I poop again before Christmas?"

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 4 of my official liquid pre-op diet, 13days in if you count my less-hard-core but still very low carb dieting and I smell funky. I shower and put on deodorant like normal but within 8 hours I'm offending myself. I live in Alaska so it's not like I'm out sweating. Will this pass? Will I stink forever? And am I just not pooping because nothing is going in or should I be proactive about moving things along? Im getting at least 64 oz of Water plus shakes.

Hey there....

The not pooping is normal.... try and have some benefibre to help move things along..

In relation to the odour, i personally did not encounter this, but i would assume that it could be your body detoxing.

And if you have bad breath that nothing seems to work on... thats very normal... it means your body is in ketosis, which is exactly what your surgeon wants.

I second the ketosis. You probably don't smell any different. Probably in ketosis where normally you have a metallic taste in your mouth, which could easily be affecting your sense of smell. Nothing to worry about.

If I had to take a guess, I would agree with the others that your body is in ketosis.

I did the Atkins diet a few years ago, I believe that starts in about 2 days. You can look up the symptoms and see if that makes sense.

During this short period of time be careful not to attract any bears. :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
