Hello,

I am going to be self pay since my insurance excludes bariatric surgery. I am looking for a recommendation for a surgeon that was a good price and had a great experience. I am willing to travel North or South in FL.

In my area (Orlando) the average price for self pay is approx. $14,500. There is a surgery center that does the sleeve as an out-patient procedure. I am a little hesitation about that. It is around $10,500.

Thank you! =)

The private rooms in Mexico are great. Mine was in Juarez. I think the quality of care was great, the cost savings spectacular.

I too live in Florida and found that the pricing was just too high. My insurance also excluded vsg. So for $5k me and my daughter went to TJ where I had the surgery on 4/15/16. Everything went well. Keep in mind that if you are a self pay in the US you get 0-1 nights in the hospital after surgery. In TJ I was in the hospital for 3 nights. You can't beat the pricing and the service. Every thing in MX is about you. I plan to return to MX for my mommy makeover in 2 years.

Thank you for all of the replies. I have since found a doctor in South FL. Dr. Shillingford has an all inclusive plan for 10,500. Includes 2 nights in the hospital, anesthesia, follow ups, and pre op labs. =)

Purpleapple, I am considering the same doctor, as it's the least expensive I have found in Florida for self pay. I'm in Tampa and wondering if you have yet had your surgery and how it went with payment, procedure and general happiness. And what type surgery did you choose? Thanks.

I too live in Tampa, FL, and did the surgery for less than half that including travel with Dr Illan and Bariatric Pal Mexico. I am down over 80lb in 4 months. I just got back last week from taking my mom down there. It was better this time around cause I could eat all the delicious mexican food. RT airfare from Tampa to San Diego is under $500 ea on southwest. Bill Yanez can get you set up

I live in Orlando. I already had the sleeve and was having problems. I used BariatricPal and Dr. Illan performed a mini gastric bypass on July 28. I spent 3 nights in the hospital and received very good care. After leaving the hospital you stay in a recovery condo or nice hotel room with a doctor checking on you and a valet always close by or by phone call. I will go just to visit, I had such a positive experience.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
