GG123 5 Posted April 28, 2016 I am booked in for surgery on the 11th of May I am booked to go to Thailand on the 5th of October for 3 weeks. Should I cancel? My Doctor seems to think it will be OK. He said after 6 weeks I will be fine to travel. Has anyone else traveled after there operation? Will I be OK to eat the food over there?
JT1230 36 Posted April 28, 2016 At 5 months out you will know what your sleeve can and can't handle. Thailand should have plenty of delicious fish on their menus. When you have surgery you put your life in a Drs hands. If you feel comfortable doing that then I would definitely trust them when they say your fine to travel. Megall9 268 Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) I'm so jealous, I loved Thailand! Mind you I went before surgery (surgery is coming up on May 9th) but you will have tons of food choices while there. There is a wide variety of fish and seafood, my favorite dish by far was chicken cashew. Some places serve it mixed with rice, but you can ask for it to be separated. The Soups are really good too. A lot of their food is spicy, and you will know by then if you can handle spicy or not. My mother couldn't while we were there, so she would ask for her food "one chili" meaning mild. If you hit markets or street vendors there is usually a ton of fresh fruits and vegetables as well. Pomello and jack fruit were my favorites, I didn't get to try durian but have heard that it is very stinky! Apparently if you can get past the smell it's supposed to be delicious. Don't cancel, just be mindful of how you are feeling. I flew from Canada, 30 hours, and was sick my first two days there. Make sure when the seat belt light is off on the plane that you get up and move around. And of course, stay hydrated! It's a different kind of heat from anything I'd ever felt before. Always always have Water with you and sip sip sip! I hope you have a wonderful time! Edited April 28, 2016 by Megall9
GG123 5 Posted April 28, 2016 Thank you for your reply. I feel a lot better about going now. The food was the only thing I was worried about. As long as I avoid rice I should be fine. Good luck with your surgery! I'm so excited and scared It will be worth it.

Hello new me 153 Posted April 29, 2016 You will be fine. I went to Belize 3 months out from surgery. I had no issues. Yes, I may have eaten off all of my travel partners plates instead of ordering my own. I had a blast with no food issues at all.
BabyNewYear 31 Posted April 29, 2016 Hi GG123, Not to rain on your parade or anything but I just returned from a cruise on Norwegian to Mexico, Belize and Honduras and got Canflybactor!! I was 3 months post op and since we were eating on the cruise ship I thought I would be safe. So wrong!! Long story short it was miserable and my doc said the WLS probably made it worse. I wish I had known about the risk ahead of time which is why I am responding to your post. I love to travel and won't stop but I might consider taking along some antibiotics just in case. Oh and I''ll never travel with Norwegian either, lol

Clementine Sky 708 Posted April 30, 2016 That's fantastic! I think you'll be absolutely fine. I had the VSG in August of 2015 and went to Australia in December, then Peru in February without any problems. I enjoyed the trips more than ones in the past when I was literally and emotionally "weighed down". I brought individual Protein packs from the Vitamin Shoppe with me both times, and a Water filter bottle (though I ended up buying bottled water). I also brought some Protein Bars and Larabars. I always bring some stomach-settling OTC meds as well as sleep meds when I travel since tummy issues and insomnia due to the new time zone are common nuisances. I'd definitely make a point of seeing your doctor before the trip just to make sure all your blood work is fine, and to discuss any necessary medication or vaccines. A friend got Hep A in Thailand in college, and it was brutal. Fortunately I've never gotten that sick while traveling. Here's the list of recommended vaccines: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/thailand I hope you go and have an amazing time.

Dub 9,922 Posted May 2, 2016 I feel like you'll be great in that time frame. You'll be feeling rock solid and ready for the world by 3 months for sure. You've given yourself plenty of time. That is going to be a fun trip. Have fun. I would simply make sure I had follow-up appointments scheduled just prior to the trip.....share your concerns with your pcp and your sleeve surgeon......perhaps they'll write you a proactive prescription for antibiotics and such to take along with you just in case. The traveling....airports and handrails and such are where you'll be most exposed to foreign germs. I really wouldn't fear the food so much. You'll be presented with a wide array of of tasty eats. Shell ???? 224 Posted May 2, 2016 I'm sure it would be fine the variety of food is huge you can easily adapt your hotel will have great Breakfast options to get your Protein in. Maybe take some Protein powder in sachets and bars just as a back up incase you get caught short. Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok is amazing I myself have had surgery there not sleeve surgery but cosmetic surgery it has some of the best doctors and specialists all American board certified so any issues just go there. I would test the waters with rice if you plan to re incorporate it back to your diet before you eat it in Bangkok I've read a few people have issues with it take all your acid/reflux pills with you as there pharmacies are hard to communicate with at times.
