Feeling like I made a huge mistake [emoji26]

Recommended Posts

I'm 10 weeks post gastric bypass and I have been struggling since April 6th when I suffered a week of horrible diarrhea and cramping and my pouch felt like it was on fire. My PA started me on Sucralfate and Reglan and everything started to improve almost immediately. I have been having ugly side effects from the Reglan, so today I decided not to take it to see if that's what's causing sleepiness, fidgety and depression. The verdict is YES, but at a price, my pouch feels aweful tonight . In addition to these issues I'm having a hard time reaching my calorie and Protein goal because I just can't eat the amount I should be eating at this point. I'm feeling so defeated Thanks for listening. I'm not sure what to do next, my next Dr appointment is May 18th at which point I'll be 3 months post op. I have lost 40 lbs since surgery but I can't even enjoy it right now. Sorry for having a whoa is me moment but sometimes it just helps to talk to someone that can relate .

If you are having that much difficulty, you need to see your surgeon NOW, not May 18th. You should not have to be on medication to make your pouch feel better. Something is not right and you need to be seen and taken care of immediately. I would call your surgeon's office and demand to be seen. That is ridiculous!

I am wondering why your PA prescribed Sucralfate and Reglan. Both are used to treat severe acid reflux (GERD).

Prior to RNY gastric bypass surgery, I had severe acid reflux. As a result whenever I had an episode, I used over the counter Prilosec (omeprazole). After surgery, my surgeon prescribed the same drug for the first year. He said it was to allow my stomach to heal. I discontinued the use of Prilosec after the first year. I am 3 years post-op and my severe acid reflux has gone into remission. I am wondering if Prilosec might be a better alternative!

My other thought is to ask if you took Probiotics after surgery to restore your beneficial gut bacteria.

I'm taking Prilosec too. I have been taking a probiotic for a couple weeks now. Something is irritating my pouch, I need to find out what. Now that I think about it, it could be my chewable Vitamin. I wasn't taking it when I first started this medication and was feeling better. I've been taking it again for about a week or so and now I'm starting to have problems again....hmmmm

.

Reglan Is for motility (helps the gut), while Sucralfate is an antacid. Reglan has some very nasty side effects.

Reglan makes me have uncontrollable movement of my arms and legs. I get very agitated and cannot hold still. Thankfully only given to me once in the ER. lol Scary stuff!

I agree...I do not like the Reglan at all!! I wonder if there is an alternative without the nasty side effects?

Hmmm. Something in the hospital gave me that horrible side effect. I thought it was the Zofran, but maybe it was the reglan. There are a bunch of alternative for anti emetics like Zofran, scolpamine, and probably a bunch more. My place even recommended Benadryl as a mild anti nausea med after discharge. Ginger really helps me too. Zofran can sometimes interact with SSRIs

On the anti emetics I got very restless. Looking back it was kind of funny. I apparently couldn't keep clothes on I was so out of it. No chance of a blood clot with all that movement. They loaded me up before the pouch test. I couldn't sit still in the line. It took a lot of self control not to run back up to my room afterwards on the 6th floor and I was pacing a lot. Once I got back to my floor I started practically running and punching my legs to stop the feeling in them. They gave me torredol then and it knocked me out.

Well thank goodness! There is no need for you to feel so poorly after having surgery for this. For sure not as long as you were having difficulties! Glad you are feeling better!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
