Can we add a little fruit to our protein shakes?

Recommended Posts

That's a question for you surgeon or nutritionist. I wasn't allowed any fruit until 28 days post-op. But every plan is different.

Not sure how far out you are since soft foods stage can vary by program. However, my program includes a serving of fruit (more servings now since I'm over 3 years out) but I was not allowed fruits with small seeds (strawberries, raspberries, etc.) early on. So, yes, a small amount of fruit is okay in a Protein Shake. I would stick to stone fruits, pears, or apples right now.

You can try bananas. Now, I wasn't allowed fruit once I got to normal food. It has too much sugar in it.

Ask your dietitian or surgeon to be certain. Not all WLS programs are the same.

I was able to eat some apple sauce (unsweetened, of course) in the pureed phase, if I wanted it, and others as tolerated as time passed. You will/may find that because you can eat so very little now that you focus on the Protein you need to consume and eventually add other foods down the road. I still have trouble getting sufficient veggies and fruits eaten because once I eat my Protein, I'm full.

Yes. Anything I ask I bring up to my dietician as well. But thanks, I'm 8 days post op and my little booklet says unsweetened pureed fruit and soft/ripe bananas

A half a banana blended into a vanilla shake might make the darned thing more palatable! :) If you want to only use half, cut them in half before peeling, and the other half will keep longer with peel still on it.

My dietician emailed me back and said I can blend some fruit into my Protein shakes during the soft food/ pureed stage. She actually said "great idea!".

I told her they were frozen blueberries and cherries

Great! I was just going to post that I add frozen tropical fruit--mango, pineapple, etc to my Protein Shakes instead of ice. Yummy!! :)

Stay away from strawberries raspberries or blackberry though bc they have too many seeds and you are NOT allowed to have seeds in soft phase. 1/2 a banana mixed in would give you a great potassium boost but no more than 1/2 per day with your Protein bc they have a lot of carbs.

It's funny how instructions vary. My program has no problem with fruits like strawberries or raspberries -- my surgeon uses a double cutter/stapler tool (I think most surgeons do) so there is absolutely no risk of any seed or any other food touching any staple line. But if I had even thought about something like bananas, mangos, or applesauce I am sure the entire dietitian staff would have shown up at my house to give me 40 lashes while making me recite chapter and verse from my post-op handbook.

You're program doesn't allow pureed fruit?

@@ld33 not high-carb, high-sugar fruit like mangos, bananas, and apples -- especially not early on. Later you might be able to add that kind of thing if you could fit it into your daily carb allowance, which is unlikely unless the only other thing you are eating is meat.< /p>

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
