Fasting with Lapband

Recommended Posts

:help:Hi...my name is Gloria. I am Muslim. Our Holy month of Ramadan starts in Sept. I'm not sure if anyone has been through this, but during that month we fast from sun up to sun down. I fast on Mondays and Thursdays the month before to get by body use to it. I had my lapband surgery on Mar 08 '07.

Thursday Aug 9th was the first day of my fast in preparation for Ramadan. I didn't eat or drink anything from 5:30am-8:18pm. When I ate, I ate slowly and very little. Then after 15-20 I started to feel sick like I wanted to throw up. My question is, has anyone fasted for a long period of time and if so, what was the outcome?

Of course I'm going to ask my Dr about this before Ramadan and I'm hoping he will give me the ok to do it. My husband says I'm excused because of my lapband, but I look forward to Ramadan and I would hate not to be able to participate.

Any advise?

Gloria :cry

I have the same exact question, although I'm Christian. I need to fast for a specific concern and want to know if anyone else has done it.

I am Jewish and we had a fast-day in early August. It was from sunndown until sundown, 25 hours. I didin't think my RNY doc would let me fast, but he said "try it--if you feel sick, stop." Right before the fast, I dran a lot of Water. Surprisingly, I felt fine...when it ended, I had a a lot of water again, and a lite meal and went to bed. Hope this helps.

I have a lapband and have fasted with no ill effects. Just be sure to drink plenty of fluids and take your Vitamins. I did notice that when I began eating again, I filled up very fast, my restriction seemed to actually be tighter! I don't know about those with the RNY... they should consult their doctor because their malabsorption issues may play a bigger role. With the band, however, we bandsters are still absorbing all our vitamins, etc.:car:

Blessings, Mary

With Ramadan don't you fast from sunrise to sundown? I would eat as much Protein as I could prior to sunrise, drink Water throughout the day, then eat again after sunset.

Icequeen, I think that during ramadan nothing passes the lips - so no Water would be allowed.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
