How Do you Know when your full?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm newly banded and just had my first fill. I am afraid to eat till I'm completely full, but at the same time I'm curious as to how much food my tum can hold now. I got 1.6cc fill, and had some pain when I first ate solids, but I soon discovered my bites were too big and I was eating too fast. But it does seem like I can still eat quite a bit and was wondering if there was some sort of feeling that comes befor the dredded pb?? thanks-

I think a lot of us get signals other than the full feeling. I sigh or burp just before I've had too much. I stop when either of those occurs. Usually within about 5-10 minutes I actually feel full. If I ignore it and take 1-2 more bites then I am miserable!!

To be honest, when I'm full, I don't feel good. I think it's important to learn the difference b/w being satisfied (not hungry) vs. being full. With the band, we need to eat to the point where we are no longer hungry. As soon as I feel satisfied, I stop. I've learned that if I don't, I will pay. I will be very uncomfortable, almost nauseous. And it takes a while for that feeling to go away.

Hope that helps!

Like Wombat, I too get the sigh or burp when I have to stop. I have learned a few times if I push past the sigh, I end up feeling terrible. I am actually trying to train myself to stop even before the sigh. That depends on how small my bites are and how much I am paying attention. When I get wrapped up in conversation, I can eat way too fast.

The whole thing is a learning experience and I think Jack hit the nail on the head..get over the whole "full" thing. There are days when I wish I could eat a mass quantity..I sometimes miss the feeling of scarfing down a large sub or having a big plate of food. It is weird and a little sad, but I then I am thankful for my band, it reminds me I cannot live that way anymore. Some of our old ways are hard to get over, but in time we can all get over them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
