Still addicted to carbs!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!! I'm 5 months post op and 109.8lbs down but I still love carbs, and my stomach seems to love them to, does anyone else feel this and how can't I step away from them?!

BTW here's a pic a month after op and now!post-290901-14616779483704_thumb.jpg

The surgery doesn't cure carb addiction. In fact, carbs seem to go down easier than just about any other type of food. You have to be disciplined and keep putting your Protein first. If you are getting in 100 grams of protein a day, it doesn't leave much room for carbs. A good way to "reset" when it comes to carbs is to go back to shakes and protein only for a week or so. That will put your body in ketosis and as long as you then stick with protein first and don't do any carb-only Snacks, your carb cravings should subside a bit.

Are you talking about white bread, crackers and Cookies and stuff like that? Because dairy, fruits and veggies have carbs too. Just healthier kinds of carbs.

The best way to not crave the processed carbs of bread, Pasta, crackers and so forth is to stop them all together and the cravings will also stop. Same with sugar. It's hard kicking it, but once you're over the hump it gets easier and you don't miss it.

Yeah the bad carbs, I need to just kick them fully.. I'm hoping that the feeling to always have them goes soon!

How are you doing on getting your Protein in? At 5 months your restriction should still be tight enough that by putting protein first and getting in 100 grams a day, you just don't have the room for carbs.

The only way to beat carb addiction is to stop eating them. After you go through withdrawals your body will stop craving them. However, if you allow yourself to eat carbs again the cravings will return.

When you cut them out you will notice you start craving other things likes nuts and Peanut Butter for example.

I cringe when I read posts from people here who talk about eating Cereal for Breakfast or mashed potatoes or baked potatoes. Feel so bad for them. Our bodies turn that into pure sugar. One potato is equal to one cup of sugar.

I don't mean just Protein shakes. I mean overall protein intake from real food as well. How many grams of protein are you getting a day?

Start tracking your food in an app. Knowing how much Protein and calories you are intaking really helps.

Your weight loss is going to start slowing down soon, so you are going to need to know your macro nutrients so you can adjust things.

I eat 100-120g of Protein a day. I have no room for carbs that aren't veggies or dairy. I eat the veggies for Fiber and the dairy for fat/protein. Every food you eat should be helping you meet your goals at this point.

Also there are lots of low carb substitutions for so many items. Look into those.

But please start tracking your food, it helps so much.

Thankyou for the advice.. what app is the best to track what you are taken in?

I think it comes down to personal preference. I like Loseit. A lot of people use MyFitnessPal. Lifesum is another option

Download a few and try them.

I also think visually seeing what you are eating helps too. If you can see the calories and carbs in those items you are eating it might make it easy to let them go.

Also, your progress so far is great. Don't let those carbs hold you back from your goals.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
