Estimated post-op weight loss chart

Recommended Posts

I like that chart. It shows REALISTIC losses expected. I honestly don't understand where people get their thinking that they are going to lose 100 pounds in 3 months....

That being said, I've seen many go above and beyond what this chart indicates, also. Although I felt my loss was on the slow side compared to some, according to this I was ahead of schedule. I lost 85 pounds in 1 year ;)

That tracks pretty well with my rate of loss if you look at the progress in my signature.

I'm eight months out and the chart is in alignment with my weight loss thus far. At the six month mark I'd lost around 45 pounds from my weight on the day of surgery. I've lost weight slowly and not always steadily the past couple of months, but still feel confident I'll be able to lose at least 15 more pounds before my one year surgery anniversary. My BMI has gone from 31.9 to 24.3. I have PCOS and hypothyroidism and usually lose weight at the speed of a turtle on crutches, so I'm pleased with the progress. I think the chart is realistic.

I started at 238, I'm 8 days post op, and am now 201.5... Everybody is different. I can't wait to break under 200! I haven't weighed less than 200 pounds in 2 years!

The long term goals are pretty accurate. The short term goals like the 10 days to 3 month goals are pretty aggressive.

People expect to drop a ton of weight right after surgery and it doesn't happen that way for a lot of people. I saw the biggest losses in months 3-6. In the very beginning when my calories were low, I wasn't losing at the pace on that chart.

I definitely didn't lose weight in the 10 days right after surgery. It was 105 degrees every day and I was retaining Water like crazy.

Thanks for posting that - it is nice to have some info on what one can expect "on average" - my surgeon didn't even want to discuss weight loss in concrete terms. And my experience lines up pretty well with their range at 6 weeks.

I found this on Pinterest and thought it was interesting. Any feedback on its accuracy in terms of other's personal experiences?

If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? We started at almost the same weight.. My goal is 138, since I'm 5'5" & 3/4.. (Yes the 3/4 counts! Lol) and I'd love to be around 150 in 6 months!!! You did awesome!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
