Do you think I could hide the sleeve from my doctor?

Recommended Posts

If you ever have to have any type of abdominal X-rays done the staple line and altered stomach would show up for your doctor to see. I personally don't know if I would chance trying to hide it.

I don't know how it works in the military but there's so much sharing of health info electronically (health information exchange or portals) that I wouldn't risk them not finding out. What if there are complications? Your Dr may see the scars too and question them.

Depends on where you get it done. I had it done in Mexico. They don't share data. Most doctors in the states use a damn computer network that the government funded and exempts itself from patient privacy laws we think we have. (Big pharmaceutical companies tap into it as well insurance and government). So I didn't tell my primary care doctor and it's not on my record. All he knows is I have done a good job losing weight.

I'm prior service and my husband is active Army...you should NOT have a disallowed medical procedure while you're active USPHS. You could lose your commission, your benefits and receive an other than honorable discharge. Do you meet height/weight standards and if not, how are you allowed to continue in active service?

No, I'm not meeting the height & weight standards; however, no one has made an issue out of it.

You would be taking such a risk...I'm pretty sure USPHS falls under UCMJ, you could lose pay, rank, even be court-martialed for something like this. And if you had complications and had to receive care, they'd find out then. PHS may not have instant access to your treatment record, but all they'd have to do is request it from the treating facility and it would be provided to your chain of command. Also, you've already falsified information to keep them from finding out...that's concerning in and of itself. Just give this a great deal of thought, only you knows how getting the surgery weighs against your career and your reputation in your field. Good luck with your decision.

Any type of bariatric surgery is non-waivable in the militery. You trying to hide it would be unethical and dishonest which will impact your discharge, and you will be discharged once the surgery is learned.

As a matter of practice I cannot see any benefit to being anything less than completely honest with your medical team. Withholding information or being dishonest will only hurt you.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
