Weight loss right after surgery and gas

Recommended Posts

4 days after WLS and the scale has gone up instead of down. I'm confused and frustrated as to why but not totally so because I've had bites of food my boyfriend has tempted me with. Bites only but non the less it's been significantly harder than anticipated. I still feel like I have so much gas despite walking around and taking gas x strips. Thought anyone?

I had really bad gas pains for months, it just finally went away. I don't know about the weight thing though. Are you getting your Protein & Water in?

It helps to get the bass out if you lay on your left side in the fetal position. I was having severe stomach pain and I just wished I could fart. The nurse told me to lay like that and it was instant relief. Hope that helps.

The first few weeks after surgery, your body is in a major heal mode. So it will take a little time for the excess gas problem to ease up. After surgery, when you were in the hospital they pumped your body with fluids. Thus when you leave the hospital, generally you weigh more then when you first arrived. It takes a few days for you to lose this excess weight.

Concentrate on meeting your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Your meal volume in the beginning will be incredibly small. Also at 4 days post-op, you should be in the full liquid state. Solid foods can damage your stomach while it is healing.

Lots of people gain weight immediately after surgery due to fluids given during surgery and swelling. Stay off the scale for a few days. It will all come off (though know now that most encounter a stall at 3 weeks after the immediate drop during the 2nd week). And please don't take bites of anything right now. Your stomach is healing and you could really do damage to yourself. This isn't just about 'will power'. Think of it as having your arm in a sling after shoulder surgery and not being able to go out and toss a baseball around. You have to let your stomach heal. There is a reason for the liquid diet at this stage.

As for your boyfriend, please please tell him to stop with the tempting. That is completely unfair and could be detrimental to your health. If he doesn't stop, then kick him to the curb. Your health is the most important.

I had my surgery on a Monday, I came home on Tuesday 12 lbs heavier. I retained most of the IVfluids I was given in surgery and while in the hospital. By Friday I had urinated it all out then actually began losing real weight.

As far as eating, 4 days out there is hardly any time for everything to heal and eating solids can put a lot of pressure on the suture lines in your pouch. I was on Clear Liquids only for the first 10 days post op and I know every surgeon is different with their stages, but right at first I think it is important to work through the temptation so it will all heal and hopefully the body can kind of reset its thinking about food.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
